Suzanna walked slowly up to the one bed chamber she shared with her daughter above the tavern. She immediatly headed toward the washing basin to clean off the scum of that night. The water was cold as always, but tonight it soothed her sore mouth, and wrist. Quickly and quietly she changed out of her work clothes and into a night gown that didn't smell of beer and men. Calmly she looked down onto the sleeping face of her child. Her beautiful and sweet S'lena. The small girl stirred and flutered her eyes open. "Mama?" she whispered. "Yes honey, it's me." Suzanna answered. "How was your evening?" "I got to go play with that boy John who lives with his father, who builds ships, and they let me eat with them again." "That's wonderful dear." Suzanna flashed a fake smile then turned away so the stubborn tears could silently run down her face. Thank goodness for John's family, who although hated her, were so kind to S'lena, and kept her safe when Suzanna was busy working. Quickly she wiped her eyes dry and turned back to her daughter. "Let's go to sleep dear, and we'll talk more in the morning." "But what if one of us doesn't wakeup, like that morning daddy stayed asleep. Susanna's heart jumped to her throat. "No honey," she managed to push out some words though it felt like the world was standing still. "We'll be here tomorrow, and we'll both wake up, I can guarentee it." "I love you mommy," said S'lena as she lurched forward giving her mom a big hug. Suzanna winced in pain as S'lena grabbed her wrist. "Mommy are you okay?" S'lena worriedly looked at her mother's arm. "I'm fine dear, I just hurt my wrist at work, that's all." S'lena looked at her mother questionly. "You need to be more careful mommy," S'lena scolded, "you get hurt a lot at work." "Yes I do. It must just be 'cause I'm clumsy. Now let's get some sleep." Suzanna gently eased next to her daughter in the bed they shared. She tucked her daughter close to her, so they could keep each other warm during the night, and pulled the thin blanket over top of them. "Sweet dreams my sweet Lena." "Sweet dreams mommy."It wasn't long before they both drifted off to sleep, although the nightmares still came for the both of them, they had learned to deal with it.
