Shadows of Fear, Chapter 5
“Dang it...I fell asleep again...”
I blinked my eyes open, rolled over and looked at Sil sitting on her bed, fake anime tears streaming down her face.
“I ran out of Mountain Dew,” she said.
“Dork,” I muttered, rolling off the cloud to get dressed.
“It’s not my fault!” She wailed. I giggled.
After getting dressed, I walked down to the main room, remembering my way from the night before, and beat Beast Boy’s butt playing video games all morning. (I know I rule.)
So then around lunchtime I was chased up to Sil’s room by BB and Cyborg. (Sore losers…)
So, basically, the rest of the afternoon was uneventful…
Oh, wait…
Almost forgot…
Around two, the alarm went off inside the Tower.
I finally had a chance to stop some baddies. (Yay!)
I rushed down to the main room behind Sil, eager to find out what the problem was.
Someone was doing something bad down at the warehouses…
We all set out immediately; splitting up into groups once we got there.
Sil, Alex, some people named Saphire and Ember, and I were to check out warehouse three.
Joy oh joy oh joy…
“I don’t like the looks of this place,” Saph said as we all stepped into the warehouse.
“Neither do I,” Sil said, shuddering.
“We may have to split up…” Ember said thoughtfully. “Sil, Saph, you two head that way. Sky, Alex, you two go the other way and I’ll go this way.” She pointed to three different directions. I nodded, a hand closing tightly around my necklace. We split up, running in different directions.
After a while of walking, my communicator went off.
“Yeah?” I said, stopping to answer it.
It was Ember.
“You guys find anything yet?”
“No, not yet,” Alex said.
“Sil and Saph haven’t either. I’ll check in with the other Titans. Be careful,” Ember said.
“Right,” I said, closing my communicator and sliding it back into my pocket.
We continued searching in the maze of boxes for a while until I heard it…
A slight /whoosh!/ coming from behind me.
I spun around, searching the place for the maker of the noise.
“What?” Alex asked, stopping.
I stared hard into the dimness.
“Nothing,” I said after a while, relaxing. “I guess I’m just hearing things…C’mon, let’s go…” We began walking again, but I never really fully relaxed. I jumped at the slightest noise, flinched whenever a light flickered, and I just kept thinking about the shadow person in my dreams. There’s no way that it could’ve found me…
I heard another whoosh somewhere to my right, and I stopped walking, Alex continuing until he realized that I wasn’t following anymore.
“Sky?” He asked, turning around taking a step towards me.
I stared at the ground, clenching and unclenching my hands.
“It’s here,” I whispered.
“What is?”
“It…The shadow person…From my dreams…It’s back…”
Alex stepped closer and I closed my eyes.
“It found me…I can’t believe that it found me…” Tears began to stream down my face.
“It’s okay, Sky, I won’t let it hurt you…”
“It knows I’m on the team…It knows everything about me…It’s here to kill me just like it killed my mom and just like it killed Dan…”
“Sky?”
“It’s coming after you, too…” I was crying really hard now. “I don’t want you to get hurt…”
“I won’t get hurt…”
“Yes you will…It’ll make sure of that…Now, please, run…”
“Sky…” Alex took another step towards me, but something crashed into him, ramming him into some boxes.
“Alex!” I screamed, opening my eyes. There, in front of me, stood the shadow person.
“Hello, Sky,” it hissed.
“No,” I said, my eyes growing wide with fear. “No, you’re not real…You’re not here…”
“Yes, Sky, I am real, and you know it…” It took a step forward.
“No, you can’t be…You’re just…just…”
“Just a shadow? Oh, no, you know better than that, Sky…You know that I’m perfectly real…”
“You can’t be…You just can’t…”
“Oh, yes, I can…” It took a step into the light, melting into the form of a woman with midnight-black hair, black eyes, bloody black feathered wings, and a devil’s tail peeking out of a black mini skirt.
“Remember me? I’m your mom…Or, well, I used to be anyways…”
“No you’re not! My mom loves me! She wouldn’t do anything to hurt me!”
“You sure about that?” The woman took a step closer to me.
“Of course! I know my mom better than that!”
The woman took another step closer and began to sing.
“Shai es ta la bae da.
Dai es ta la bae doh.
Shai es ta la bae da.
Dai oh koh doh…”

“No…No!” I screamed, sinking down to the ground, covering my ears and shutting my eyes tightly. The woman kept singing. I opened my eyes again and found myself in complete darkness, crying, shrunk down to an eight-year-old.
“I’m your mommy, see?” The woman said, appearing in front of me.
“No you’re not…”
“Yes, Sky, I am…”
“No…My mommy wouldn’t hurt me…My mommy would protect me….” I stood up slowly.
“Then you obviously don’t know your mommy, do you?”
“No…I know her…” I was still an eight-year-old.
“Nicely done, Shadowfire…” Another voice said from the shadows. The woman smiled evilly and disappeared in darkness.
“Who are you?” I asked, looking up.
“Surely you should know me by now…” The man said, stepping into the light. He had light brown hair, dark brown eyes, and an evil smile. “I’m Graystorm Darkside…Or, better yet…”
“John Auburn…” I whispered, my eyes growing big with fear.
“So you do know me…Good, that means we can skip the introductions and get straight to the point…” He started walking towards me and leaned down so that we were at eye level. “Hand yourself over and I’ll save your dear mommy…”
“No…” I said, glaring at him. He didn’t scare me…
“That’s why you’re here, isn’t it? To save your mom from turning herself over to me?”
“Yes…”
“Then why don’t you do the right thing and join my side in place for your mommy instead.”
“Because…I don’t need to be on your side to save my mom…I can save her all by myself…”
“Sure you can…”
“I can too!” I screamed, light and wind erupting from beneath my feet. My eyes glowed white and I rose up in the air, closing my eyes as I did so. My entire body glowed white, and soon, I wasn’t wearing a light blue dress any more…
I was wearing a white gown that flowed gracefully down to the floor and I was back to being thirteen. My necklace was glowing brightly as I floated there. Fear spread into John’s eyes as I took a floating step forward. I had taken two more steps when my necklace started to shine very brightly, swallowing us up in light. It began to emit a gust of wind, the air condensing and starting to form into two creatures: a rabbit and a bird. The two began swirling around me, creating a shield.
John stood up and glared at me, and I glared back.
“Now, now, Sky, now’s not the time to be playing dress up…” He said before lunging at me. I dodged it quite easily, then spun around to face him. I brought my hands together and a ball of wind and light started to form between them. I launched it at his head, hitting him square in the forehead. He staggered back, holding his face in pain, glared up at me, and fled.
I stared after him, smirking victoriously, and then started to glow brighter again. Light encircled me, and I changed from my ultra-powerful form back to regular old Sky again.
I floated down to the floor, landing in a sitting heap, and looked over at Alex. He had woken up sometime during the fight and was sitting up, staring at me. I got up and walked over to him.
“You okay?” I asked, kneeling down beside him.
“Yeah…You?”
“Mhmm.”
“Sky! Alex!” Sil’s voice called from somewhere far away. “You two alright?”
“We’re fine,” I said as she drew nearer.
"Sure? Okay, well, I guess whoever it was got away..." Sil said, looking around and letting out a sigh. "C'mon, let's head back to the Tower..."
Alex and I stood up, Alex teleporting and me transforming my necklace back into a guitar, forming two energy disks and hopping on them.
I don't know why I didn't tell Sil that I had fought John...
Something inside me said I shouldn't, though...
