I'm a bloody moron is what I am. I have absolutely no control over my wallet. In fact, the relationship is turned on its head. it's the wallet that has power over ME. It MAKES me buy things, I swear blind it isn't my choice to be poor!
What caused this revelation? Neo magazine and my Film & TV course, that's what. Both of them have revealed an interest in Asian film that's always been lurking beneath my love of anime. After having read the last three issues of Neo, my list of Asian films that I want has started to grow. Yesterday I couldn't bear the temptation any more. I simply HAD to go to HMV and buy something.
I wanted to get Battle Royale and its sequel, but they only had the one, and although it was only £7, it wasn't worth buying by itself, because I've seen it quite recently already. So I had a look for some of the other films I'm after. The BFI are still charging a ridiculous sum for Kurosawa films, so regrettably Seven Samurai and Yojimbo were out of the question. They also didn't have the Korean film My Wife Is A Gangster, which sounds really good. So instead I added to my collection of films by Ryuhei Kitamura, who is fast becoming one of my favourite directors. The man knows how to do fight scenes properly. I picked up his 2003 movie Sky High, and while I was at it I also got the 2-disc edition of Bong Joon-Ho's The Host, a film I read about in Neo around three issues ago. Both films made impressive viewing, but they cost £25 that I don't really have to spare. I'm living on a shoestring until April now.
I'll get a review of each film up soon, since it's been a while since I reviewed anything here, and it was supposed to be one of the aims of my journal!
