As the sky darkens, I stumble, then fall. The crowd jeers, then they throw rocks at me. A soldier lashes at my sides with a whip. Another soldier takes my face and punches my eyes. I fall again, and the heavy cross hammers my frail body, while the jagged rocks that litter the floor gash my face. I close my bruised eyes and stumble a few steps forward.
