It's the smell that she remembers - noxious smoke with an iron tang to it, creeping down the back of her throat like a nosebleed. She tries to choke it out with cigarettes, but it remains the only detail of that night she can pin down. There was more, there had to be, but the shock of it not only grayed her hair; it banished the experience from her waking mind. She woke up with one eye.
