She gave him the note inviting him. She even went so far as to buy tons of new jewelry! Yet, all she got on the big night of the prom was a bouquet of red carnations and a letter, saying;
"Dear Erica,
I am astonished that you sent me this note and greatly honored, but... um... my, er, uncle just died. Yeah, that's it. So, um, yeah. I can't go. My greatest apologies, Christopher."
