Brynhildr of the Volsunga saga was a shieldmaiden compared to more conventional aristocratic women. Brynhildr is only concerned with honor. When she ends up married to Gunnar, instead of Sigurd, the man she intended to marry, she speaks a verse comparing the courage of the two men:
