• I walked up the frigid stairs, my hand trembling as I held onto the railing rigorously. “Fourth floor” the sign read. The last time I saw my little sister was that awful, unspeakable, dire night, two years ago to this day. I feel like the blood still stains my hands. I wash them every morning, every evening, every night, and every day.
“Come on, Jayson-”Mrs. Wilson said as she opened the door to the floor “, it’s alright. She can’t hurt you. We’ll be right by your side through it all.” She sounded unagitated and it made me relax slenderly. She gave me a warm smile and I finally let go of the railing and stood close to her, not wanting to leave her side at all. A nurse with cheap shade red lipstick approached us, her bright blonde hair up in a tight bun, a few pencils sticking out of it.
“Hello! You must be Lucy’s older brother, Jayson.” The nurse smiled, the lipstick was stained in her white smile. I tried not to comment as I looked up to Mrs. Wilson who grinned and bared it.
“Yes, this is him and I’m detective Charlotte Wilson. We’ve come to visit.” She smiled to the nurse. She nodded her head, the bun bobbing with every movement.
“Well then, if you’ll follow me-” she spun around and went walking down a chilling hallway, her hips moving like she was walking down a run way. Mrs. Wilson and I sighed, looking at one another and followed after her.
The hallway gave me chills and they went dancing up my spine, my hairs standing on edge, goose bumps appearing on my arms and neck. Mrs. Wilson tried not to look at the barred doors where screams poured out of the cracks and smashing of fists and kicking of feet followed. The nurse continued to walk cheerfully down the hallway, humming a little tune as she swayed slightly to her own tune. She acted like this wasn’t weird. She acted like she was walking down the street on a bright sunny day. Only in here, she was the only bright thing in this dark place. We made it to a large door. Locks, chains, bars piled on bars, a hand ID reader, and verification code splattered about the door in an organized mess. I stood there in total awe. All this was because of my sister? Just one little child? It was an impact on me.
“Why?” I asked, not even knowing I was talking out loud.
“Your sister is a ‘special’ little girl.” The nurse answered, setting the code then placing her hand on the scanner. The chains and locks broke off and the bars slowly pulled away from one another. I tensed up and stepped closer to Mrs. Wilson, who put a hand on my shoulder.
“It’ll be okay, Jayson.” She said in a soothing tone. I didn’t respond as the nurse opened the heavy metal door. I looked into the darkness and lights began to flicker on, leading down into an even narrower hallway.
“Come along!” The nurse sang as she led us down the hallway. We followed, penny-pinching enough that we could’ve breathed down her neck. We came to another metal door, same set up as before.
“Now, we suggest you stay behind the yellow line. Studies have shown her unknown capability only works when you’re in the range of one hundred yards.” The nurse said after opening the door slowly. I heard my heart racing in my head and my breathing went very shallow. The lights flicked on and Lucy was sitting in a metal chair, her hands strapped down, legs chained, and wires were flowing in and out of her back. Her face was covered by a metal mask, a straight line of holes from the chin to the forehead of the mask, no eye holes or mouth hole. I could hear shallow breathing come out from the holes of the mask. I looked to both sides of me and saw two men armed with guns. I felt safe and unsafe at the same time looking at the guns.
“Lucy, sweetie, you’re older brother is here to see you.” The nurse said stepping into the room, the yellow line only a few feet from the door. Mrs. Wilson and I stepped in and the door shut slowly. My sister’s head moved backwards and she laid her neck on the back of the chair, her fingers curling into little fists. Flash backs filled my head the instant I laid eyes on her. The blood, my mother and father screaming, Lucy’s innocent little eyes piercing into me as I screamed for her to stop tearing apart our parent’s lifeless bodies. They were just floating in mid-air, their arms and legs ripping from their places and scattered around the room. The devil must’ve possessed her, that’s what the priest thought. He tried to perform an exorcist on her, but his life was ended just like my parents.
“Say hello, Jayson.” Mrs. Wilson mumbled into my ear and I flinched, snapping back from my flash backs. I looked back to Lucy; the mask was looking directly at me, her little hands still balled into fists. I felt her eyes set on me. I swallowed air as I looked back at the mask. I didn’t want to be here anymore, I was feeling claustrophobic. I put a hand over my heart and tugged at my shirt.
“Come on.” The nurse smiled at me. I looked up to her and nodded my head uncomfortably.
“H-hello, Lucy.” I whispered. Her head tilted to the side, the breathing getting louder from the mask. Her body started to shake slightly and whimpering came from inside of the mask. The nurse looked back to Lucy curiously.
“Are you alright, dear?” she asked, narrowing her stare at Lucy. Her whimpering grew and grew as her body began to shake even more.
“Lucy-?” she asked again, stepping forward, completely forgetting about the line.
“Nurse, no!” Mrs. Wilson said reaching out to her. Suddenly the nurse’s head spun slowly around to face me and Mrs. Wilson. The neck bones snapped and jutted out of her skin, blood spilling from her mouth. I got instantly light headed, stepping back against the door, my jaw dropping. Her head was torn off, her blood splattering all over me and Mrs. Wilson. The nurse’s body fell to the ground, landing at Mrs. Wilson’s feet. Mrs. Wilson let out a bloody scream, her arm frozen beyond the yellow line.
“Mrs. Wilson, pull it back!” I screamed. But, she was too late. Her body was pulled forward and her arm was broken off her body. She screamed and yelled like hell. She was floating in the air instantly, her legs and last arm being twisted slowly as she screamed. Her face was torn off and thrown at my feet. Her arm and legs snapped off like chicken bones, landing on the floor next to Lucy. The two men with the guns opened fired at Lucy instantly, screaming at one another to keep shooting. The bullets were deflected somehow, hitting the guards everywhere on their bodies. They fell like little rag dolls to the floor, dropping dead. I stared at Mrs. Wilson’s detached face, the blood from my face was drained and I lost my breath like the wind was knocked out of me. I looked up slowly to Lucy. She was using Mrs. Wilson’s arms to break the locks and undo the wires. She was free from the chair and I gasped, tensing up against the door.
She stood up, putting her little hands on the mask. She slid them behind the mask and pulled the mask off sluggishly. It fell with a thud and clang near her feet. Her dark chocolate curls fell forward in front of her face, her eyes closed and her baby doll face slowly emerged from her hair. She opened her bondi blue, innocent eyes and she looked up to me. Her little china doll smile sent even more chills down my spine, my heart nearly stopping.
“Big brother.” She said slowly and sweetly as she stood up straight as she fixed the dull grey, plain dress that covered her little body. I didn’t move or respond. I wanted to let out a scream, but my throat was jammed. She stepped forward, Mrs. Wilson’s arms floating above her head. The blood dripped down, hitting her little rosy cheeks as she continued to smile at me. Mrs. Wilson’s body finally fell from the air, sounding like a sack of potatoes as it slammed into the ground. Lucy stepped over her body, still walking towards me. The arms fell on top of Mrs. Wilson’s body as Lucy giggled. The nurse’s body and head floated up near Lucy.
“I never liked that nurse.” she said grabbing the nurse’s head by the bun.
“She was too perky.” She said making a sour face, shaking the head slightly. She dropped it and it smashed into the ground, blood squirting onto Lucy. The body dropped near the head and she held her hands out towards me for a hug and still did not move a centimeter.
“Brother-” Lucy said stopping behind the yellow line “, I missed you.” She put her arms behind her back. I felt an invisible hand squeeze around my neck and I finally let out a whimper and gasp. Lucy continued to smile at me and I started to cry silently.
“Please, Lucy. Please!” I pleaded, choking slowly.
“Now we can play forever together!” she said with a sweet yet uneasy voice.
“Forever and ever-” I was slammed against the wall several times, the back of my head cracking open and blood spilling out, flowing down my back “, AND EVER.” She said in a dark voice that wasn’t hers, her eye’s going blood red and her smile turned into a snarl.
“Say you love me, big brother!” she said snapping back to her normal voice, her eyes returning to normal and her impeccant eyes came back.
“I-I love y-you, Lucy.” I whimpered, closing my eyes tightly and continued to cry.
“Good!” she said with a giggle. “I love you, too.”
