If you hinted at me,
Incessantly,
That you wanted the sky,
Eventually I’d try,
Though I make you no promises.
It might just be air
And a cotton ball in a jar.
If I could give you anything,
Everything you asked,
I’d spoil you,
Give you your heart’s desires,
And your soul’s wishes.
But then, I think,
If I gave you everything,
What in the world would be left for me?
I’d like things too.
I’d like a sunset in August,
Hands clasped like on field trips of old,
And a sunflower…
But you knew that already.
I’ve taken your hints to heart,
Turned them over in my mind
Ten thousand times,
But hints and all, I still don’t know what you want.
You are cloudy,
And I am rain,
Together we could destroy our world,
Or make it good again.
If you hinted to me,
Incessantly,
Or maybe once or twice,
That you needed a smile,
I’d wear some bells,
And lipstick on my nose,
And be your jester,
But not your clown.
If you hinted at me,
Incessantly…
But you do not.
Your thoughts are cloudy,
And I am rain,
And somehow,
We need to make things right again.
