• Once upon a time, a child got lost.
She was scared, but continued her
    Trek through the frost.
    She heard something purr.
In front of her was a cat,
Its fur as black as night,
Its blue eyes gleaming as it sat.
She looked up and saw a light,
    Not knowing what it was.
When she close she saw a house.
    She felt the cat’s claws
    Scratching at her blouse,
    Pushing her with its paws,
    Then the door opened.
At the door stood two old women,
Their faces wrinkled, but eyes filled with kindness.
    “You’re not from our coven.”
They spoke as if in stress.
The girl spoke to the woman on the right “Please ma’am,
I’m lost and cold with no way home.”
“Our names are Sam and Pam”
The women said, one waving a comb
“Come in, come in, dear child.”
The girl wasted no time in doing just that.
Paintings decorated the wall, all of the wild.
She found a soft chair and just sat.
The women came in, a steaming bowl in Sam’s hand
“Eat dear child and tell me your name.”
The girl took the bowl, setting it on the stand
    “My name is Shane.”
    The two women smiled
    “Where is your family?”
“I have none, even though I’m still a child.”
Shane felt tears and spoke warily
“Earlier you said I’m not from your coven.
    Are you witches?”
“We aren’t a huffin’ an puffin’,
    But yes, with minor glitches”
Pam said, laughing at her words.
Sam looked at Pam “That’s the big bad wolf.”
Their laughs were melodic, like little song birds.
They looked at Shane, warmth in their eyes
“Would you like to live with us? We promise we won’t bite.”
She stared at them, fiddling with her hair ties.
    Her heart was taking flight,
    Mirth being its fuel
“I’d love to stay with you, but what will I do?”
Pam smiled “First we must celebrate Yule”
Sam took over “And whack Pam with my shoe.”
Shane smiled at their ridiculous behavior,
Happy to see she won’t be alone.
    That cat was her savior
And when she looked at it, her gratitude was known.
