I'm turning 18 soon and it is dawning on me how close I am to becoming what most people will refer to as, an adult. I do not want to grow up. I enjoy being a child and though I can't stop time and the inevitable, I can remain young at heart and hope that one day I'll hear the tinkle of bells and see the light of a pixie leading my way to NeverNeverland. . .
The Neverbird
Everyone grows up,
We try not to
But we all do.
I refuse to.
When the light of the pixie comes
and the rooster crows, I will go.
I will open the window;
and away I will soar
To the land of adventure and youth.
Past maturity
Past age
Past reality and the unexpected
Past the second star to the right,
And straight on till morning.
I will never grow up
Or become an adult.
I will remain young at heart.
While you forget the games you used to play
And begin to turn grey
I will be dueling pirates and
Swimming with the mermaids.
Free in the land of the Neverbird.
The Indians will be my tribe,
Mr. Crocodile my pet,
Joy my best friend.
Hook, my enemy,
You, long gone. . .
I, forever young.
