When the power goes out,
It's dark, black, and scary,
I take out a candle,
And light it, quite drearily.
It glimmers, it flickers,
The light glows dim.
I watch as the wax,
Oozes over the rim.
I study the texture,
The shape and the size,
I think about the flame,
While I slowly rise.
I look out the window,
While I think about life,
It's similar in all ways,
It's just the same old strife.
You start out on top,
The flame is then lit,
As the wax drips down,
You soon throw a fit.
Sooner or later,
You'll finally see,
It's downhill from here,
That's when you start to plead.
You wish your life was longer,
You wish you didn't pout,
But then things become painful,
The flame... flickers out.
I blow out the candle,
Get in bed with a sigh,
I close my eyes and wish,
For tomorrow I may die.
