• Behind these iron gates i watch
    as people pass me by,
and never knowing what its like to truly learn to fly.

You said you loved me but why won't you set me free?
Instead you keep me trapped behind these big iron gates,
and now i only watch the world with a heart full of hate.

It's not fair because they can be free,
all of them except for me.
I reach for the ones i love but they are just out of arms length,
The bars keep me from touching them, from holding them tight.

All i see is the big letter "S" on the top of the gate for our family's last name,
and to all that pass it must be a game.
Those that pass look through the bars like i am an animal at the zoo,
i can not see how my pain is not hurting you.

So i fall to my knees still reaching for the one i love,
and i hear a bell and as it rings.
i think this must be why the caged bird sings
