• I walked down to the river
Just to watch a kid drown
I took a front row seat on the bank
    Intent on not going down
    I watched him struggle
Against the invisible arms of a mothers hate
I was hypnotized by the waters dance
As he went as limp as a fisher’s bate
    His eyes stayed open
    Clouded, distant and glazed over
Staring into mine as he sank further to the bottom
    Joining all the others
    His hands were tied
    His feet weighed down
Her name frozen in his mouth
    As I turned back around
So long have I seen his image
Every night plagued by his face
    How would he have aged
If I had taken his place
But he never had a chance
    Wasn’t given a choice
No second thought to the woman
    Who took away his voice
Leaving him in the company of the millions
Who met the same dark end
    Extinguishing a precious life
Before it had the chance to begin
