Down my street in the corner
Is the little boy I walk to school every day
He is so sweet I buy him a lollipop from the candy store
One day he saw me crying
He ran to my side and asked me
"Are you ok?"
I smiled my best smile at the sweet boy
But he wasn’t convinced
His little eyes searched my face confusingly
Just as I got up to leave
To ashamed to let him see me like this
He flung his tiny arms around me and said
“Are you crying because you don’t want to walk me to school anymore?”
I looked at him and hugged him back
“No” I said “I like walking you”
“Then what’s hurting you” he asked
He sounded so much like a grown up
And for a second I wanted to tell him
But his little bubbly eyes reminded me he was just a child
I went to the store
Holding his hand
And bought him a lollipop
While we were walking back home
There was a drive by
And they shot the boy in the chest
Time of death 3:04
The sweet little boy
May he rest in peace
I didn’t cry that day
Or the next day
Or the years before that
I couldn’t let him see me cry
I went to the store
And bought the flavored lollipops he loved
His favorite because they were my favorite
Strawberry
Apple
Raspberry
Every year I go back to that house
Pretend to walk him to school
And buy a lollipop
As I walk back
I can’t help but think
Why didn’t’ a bullet hit me too
I miss that sweet boy
Our walks to school
And the smile he used to give me
