I hid behind the closest tree. I felt my stomach tighten and I couldn’t breathe anymore. They were my family, their life at risk, and I couldn’t do anything to stop it. I felt hopeless, worthless. The burglar was demanding for anything valuable. I guess he thought we were wealthy, considering the size of our house. And he was yelling like today was going to end because around our house was deserted. The town was too far away and even if I ran there, I would find nobody to help us. The police were even farther ahead.
Someone help. Please. Anybody.
“There’s a girl behind here, Greg!” a voice yelled behind me. I froze and my heart seemed to stop.
He pulled me by my wrist and I resisted. “No!” I tried to pull away but his grip was too firm on mine. He was a full-grown up man and I was only 16 years old girl. There was no way of beating him. And I’m not the best at self-defence. Take what happened just before I came here and you’ll get what I mean.
So I did something I never would’ve done in my life. I bit his hand.
It was disgusting, salty and hair and all, but it was worth it. He yelped and let me go. I started to run but a gun was fired at me and missed me and hit the tree in front of me.
“Sky!” my mom yelled.
“Stop.” Greg said.
I froze at the spot, knowing if I moved even an inch, he would shoot me again.
“Now,” he said, “come over here like a good little girl and stay here.”
I slowly nodded, and turned around and stepped towards them. Then all of a sudden, he grabbed my hair. What's up with everybody grabbing my hair anyways?
I didn’t cry out in pain when he pulled my hair, like a normal person would’ve, though it felt the hair was being ripped out from my scalp. I then felt something cool beside my head. I felt frozen like a frozen turkey before Thanksgiving.
A gun was being pointed directly onto my head.
