Before he'd been involved in various US military conflicts (every one from World War 2 on . . .) he wore a very different costume from the armor that would become his signature.
His original costume was a garish yellow and purple, and was the one he wore with the Minutemen team, of which he was a member until he attempted to rape the first Silk Spectre.
