They are just normal people.
Just because they are different doesn't mean they need to be treated differently.
Ever wonder why people don’t seem to understand what Emo is? Do you think it could possibly be that the whole point of being emo is to not be understood, or to not conform?
But here, finally, is a definition of what emos are all about. There is a common misconception that emos are druggies and cutters. That is very wrong. Most emos are actually straightedge, also known as sXe or SxE. This means that they are against most all forms of drugs, including caffeine and Advil. Also, not all emos cut. Some do. But then again, there are people who listen to country music that self-injure. There are people who listen to rap who self-injure. Self-injury is a mental illness. Mental illnesses do not stem from a lifestyle someone chooses to live.
Though there is a standard dress that many emos follow, does not mean that anyone who dresses that way is, in fact, emo, or that people who do not dress that way, are not. Emos have a certain style that is stereotypical of who they are. Once again, Emos are about non-conformity and about not being understood. Many of the emo guys will wear girl pants, and many emo girls wear skirts over their pants. Ties and button-down shirts are acceptable for both genders, and both will often wear written-on, ripped, and/or paint-spattered clothing. Painting the nails on both genders is acceptable, but usually nails are just bitten and torn up. It is also acceptable for the guys to wear eye-makeup, usually restricted to eyeliner only. Girls could have a wide-variety of make-up styles, including red lipstick, or no lipstick, dark eyeliner, or no eyeliner. Hair is sometimes dyed, usually either dark (like dark brown or black) or bleached blond, occasionally with streaks of bright colors (red is common). Usually the cut is choppy and in the eyes, for both genders, and females often have short hair. However, not every emo fits the dress code, and not everyone who dresses like this is an emo.
Emos are not gothic, emos are not punks. Emos are different.
The emo idea is not contagious. Most emos feel that the less emos there are, the better, because emos do not strive to be understood. The point is, just living with an emo or being friends with an emo will not make you emo.

There is a style of music known as Emo. Many emos listen to this music, but not all do. And not all people who listen to emo music are actually emo. Examples of emo bands are Hawthorne Heights and Yellowcard. Emo bands usually have more than one vocalists, and likely about 3 vocalists. One is the main vocalists and the others are used more for screaming, hissing, or whispering. However, the music is not focused as much on the background vocals, and are therefore not able to be categorized as “Screamo” or “Metal” music. Usually, emo music has a message to it. Emo music is similar to punk music, but is not to be confused with punk bands like Blink-182 or the Offspring, or Nightmare Punk like Aiden, or even Burlesque Punk like the Dresden Dolls or Panic! At the Disco. It is it’s own style. (Though you might note that many emos do listen to these bands. And by punk, yes, there are more punk bands, older punk bands, like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols. I know that. But I wrote this rant for a bunch of whiny little 15-year-old "punks" who don't even know who those bands are...)
Alright, another point. Many people do not think you can successfully be both Emo and Christian at the same time. This is FALSE. Being a Christian is about being “Not of the world” and about being a follower of Christ. Jesus Christ is not someone who defines Christians only by one view. Christians can be anyone. Jesus himself associated with, and converted, many prostitutes, thieves, and homeless people. Emos can be Christians. Emos support not being understood, and above all, not conforming. Christianity is very much about not conforming. You can be an emo and still be a Christian.
Emos are normal people. Emos are not what people think they are. Very few emos are actually the stereotypical emo, and many people who are stereotypically emo are actually not emo at all. So before you try to stereotype an emo, make sure you know what you are actually talking about.
