• I smiled, letting the warmth rise up inside for the first time in what seemed like years.
"Why are you smiling?" Jake asked me, but he was grinning too. "You're back," I replied, "You're fine. As soon as we get home you have to tell me everything that happened on the hunt!" He laughed and picked me as we started to walk home.
"Jerico!" my mother exclaimed, wiping the water from her hands with a rag as she ran up to hug him. Jerico put me down and bent down to hug my mother. "Tell me everything," she said, grinning. "Well first, where is Dad?" He walked through the kitchen and into the living room. "Dad!" Jerico exclaimed. I heard my father cuss excitedly and then get up off the couch. The two came back in, grinning broadly and my father's arm over Jerico's shoulder. "Let's sit down," my father suggested, and pulled out a seat for his son. "Tell us everything!" we all exclaimed at the same time. His eyes darkened. "I'll tell you guys later," he mumbled. Then his eyes went back to their usual color and he said, "Now, I'll have to talk to Kyle."
