I gazed at the clear blue sky with the fresh, crisp air splashing against my cheeks. Then all of a sudden, I fell into darkness. As I woke up, I realized that it was all just a dream. It felt so real. It wasn’t like anything I have ever experienced before. I got out of bed and opened the blinds of my window. Outside was a world more evolved than my dream that I had last night.
The sky was a pale blue color. The air today was all mist and chemicals both harmful and not so harmful. It was nothing like the fresh air I breathed in my nighttime fantasy. I wish that I could inhale that refreshing air for eternity, but I need to face reality. Not everything you dream is going to happen.
Therefore, I continued to get ready to go to work. It was already eight o’clock in the morning, and I am supposed to meet my friend Kaylie in the lobby of the apartment building in fifteen minutes. Since we worked at the same job, we would always meet there in the morning and go to our jobs together. Kaylie and I work at Rage magazine as editors, but at times, we would wander off into the world to take photographs for the magazine. Anyway, I went to the elevator and pressed the button for the lobby. When I walked out of the elevator, I heard a cheerful voice.
“Moishi, are you ready to go?” asked Kaylie.
I replied, “Yeah, but we have to go to the coffee shop to pick up some breakfast.”
“Don’t tell me you forgot. You know I don’t like drinking coffee.” Kaylie said. I paused for a moment to gather my thoughts to figure out what I was going to say to that.
“Of course I remember. You like drinking herbal tea in the morning.” I told her. I felt happy that I was able to remember what her favorite wake me up drink was. Kaylie liked drinking green tea the most. Then, Kaylie and I walked to the coffee shop and ordered our drinks. While we walked to the office building afterwards, I was still thinking about the dream. How beautiful everything was in my dream. It was Utopia. I was dazed by the thought of it.
“Moishi, will you stop spacing out on me? It’s the thirtieth time this week you’ve been out of it. What’s wrong? Why are you like this? ” Kaylie asked.
I replied, “Sorry about that. Nothing’s wrong. I’m just lost in thought. That’s all. No need to worry. You know that I’m usually like this.” Then I sensed that someone was behind us, eavesdropping on our conversation.
“You sure space out a lot for a grown up woman.” Angel hissed. Kaylie and I jumped. It was just, Angel, our boss at the office.
“Don’t do that. You know I hate it whenever someone surprises me like that.” Kaylie screamed.
Angel laughed, “What’s the point of having fun when I can’t even scare you from time to time. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that we are having a meeting in a few hours to discuss some business dealing with our next issue.” Then he walked away and made the strangest laughter that I have ever heard.
A few hours later, Kaylie and I went to the meeting. It was already eleven o’clock. When Angel came into the conference room, the meeting commenced. Today, we discussed about the theme of next month’s magazine and a way to give Rage a make over. Haruna suggested that we start to print magazines dealing with the environment. It turns out that everyone agreed to this. Our next issue will be all about the environment. Angel assigned Kaylie and me to go out in the world to take photographs and write articles for the magazine, and our deadline is two weeks from today.
After the meeting, Jake came into my office. He began to giving me ideas on what pieces to write for our upcoming magazine. I told him that Kaylie should be around when we are talking about the magazine. It turns out that Jake gets nervous whenever anyone sees him talking to me. The ideas that he told me were creative, and they would be helpful in investigating an article for the magazine. When Jake left, I went to Kaylie to talk to her about what I learned from Jake. We decided to commence “Operation: Environmental Issues” tomorrow.
Kaylie and I went home after our work shift was over. I gazed at the red orange sunset and thought of how hot it was when we first left the apartment. The temperature was up to 120, which was due to the lack of caring by so many people. I could feel the sweat caused by the heat running down my cheeks. The heat drained all the energy that we had.
It was produced by the carelessness of people when they used aerosol hair products. The aerosol was also unsafe for the environment. Then, it just hit me. Aerosol products could be a part of Rage’s next issue. Then out of nowhere, I gained more ideas for our magazine. I telephoned Kaylie to get some insight on the pieces I was thinking of. Kaylie and I went over on what we should put into the magazine. The day ended in exhaustion.
When I got home, I turned on music and ordered tofu, soy cubes and soymilk. These kinds of food were the few things that we lived on since the threat of disease from livestock. The cattle mutated and had spikes on all over their bodies. Mad cow disease was one of the causes of why we were not allowed to have cattle. Practically anything made from live animals was forbidden to be fed to us. Pollution and toxic materials in the soil seep into the plants, which is hard for people to eat animal related products since animals eat the things coming from the ground. These are the reasons why the government had its citizens stop eating anything with meat from animals and convert to soy products.
After I ate, I worked on my article for the magazine. A few hours later, I fell into a deep slumber. All that I saw in my dreams were anything related to Utopia. I dreamt of how beautiful the forests were before they were destroyed for the supposed betterment of human kind. As I was dreaming, the world I entered was unlike any that I have ever liked. It has trees and so many animals.
When I awakened from my slumber the next day, I went on a journey with Kaylie in search of anything environment related for Rage. We took pictures of the color in the sky and found an ancient photograph of how the sky looked like in the past. Then, we went to zoos and saw the very few animals left in our world. Kaylie and I saw how the forest and habitats in the world look now due to our destruction to make our lives better.
A few weeks later, our magazine turned out to make an impact on everyone. In Rage, we wrote a touching article about the things that we as humans have done to make our environment a disaster. Our photographs made the biggest impact because we compared how the environment looked like today and how it looked like in the past. The photographs made people open their eyes to reality to the problems facing our environment. They also make the illusion that you have seen the sites first hand, and they made you imagine how it feels to be there in those pictures.
