• ‘Wayland, can you tell me how you became a vampire?’ Carlisle asked,
I had never asked that question, so I looked up at him curiously.
‘A friend and I were rock climbing, and our cables snapped, we both went hurdling to the ground, we were taken to the hospital, my friend already was dead. The doctor came in; I felt his cold hands searching for my pulse, which was really weak. I then felt pain, terrible pain. I remember waking up alone, I don’t remember much about it. I know I was sixteen when I was changed and that’s really it. I’ve been traveling for about twenty years alone. I was volunteering at a hospital in Chicago about a year ago when I saw Calianne here, she was terribly injured, and everyone thought she was dead. I couldn’t let her die; she looked so innocent, so alive before, I couldn’t leave her to die.’ Wayland placed his hand on my shoulder pulling me closer to him.
‘Calianne, would you care to tell why you became a vampire?’ Carlisle had asked.
I was stunned by the question; I didn’t want to say why I tried to kill myself.
‘Um...well it’s a long story; I tried killing myself because I felt useless in the world. I’d lost friends and gained many enemies. I couldn’t handle it, it hurt some days to see an old friend twisted with evil and hatred in their eyes.’ I said. I felt Bella eyes grow wide with worry. I stared back down at the floor, my hair covering my face. Esme gasped, I guess that’s a reasonable response. Rosalie looked at me, she looked sorry for me. Jasper was trying to pull the sadness from me, but he couldn’t.
Wayland pulled me closer to him, he leaned his head down a bit, ‘Calianne, you’ll be fine.’ Wayland said, kissing my forehead. I picked my head up; I saw all their faces filled with sorrow or worry. I felt Renesmee’s look at me, she looked like a friend I used to have. Edward looked at me puzzled, Carlisle looked at Esme and Esme looked at Carlisle talking in hushed whispers. After awhile, they all were talking; I stayed silent, standing by Wayland, not moving an inch. Bella walked over to me.
‘Calianne, the girls are going hunting and we were wondering, if you’d like to come along?’ Bella asked.
I looked at Wayland, he encouraged me to go. ‘Okay.’ I said. Bella lead me out the back door, Alice was holding Renesmee, Esme and Rosalie were fussing about something.
‘Come on, let’s get hunting, it looks like Rosalie could use it.’ Bella said winking at me. We all headed out to the woods behind the house.
‘Calianne, how old are you?’ Bella asked.
‘Fourteen.’ I said. They all looked at me stunned.
‘But you’re still a kid.’ Esme said.
‘I know I am.’ I said. I felt shock radiating off of Bella. Alice seemed to be confused. We were coming to a river, I started picking up speed, I jumped, and I landed seventy feet past the river bank. When I did this, they all thought I was still a new born, I wasn’t, and I was past my year mark. It’s just Wayland and I had jumped deeper and longer rivers than this one. Wayland also said, when I was human, I must have been able to jump pretty far, to have it now.
‘In my human life, I was a record holder in junior high for long and triple jump.’ I said to them, when they caught up to where I was.
‘You’re very talented Calianne.’ Esme commented.
‘Thanks, when I was human, I was very talented; I just never let others know about some of my talents.’ I said. It was silent for a long time; I just kept running alongside Bella.
‘Calianne?’ Bella asked. ‘Yes?’ I asked looking up at Bella.
‘You were lonely when you were human, weren’t you?’ Bella asked. I looked down, not even Wayland asked anything like that.
‘Yes, I’ve always have been an outcast. I never had fit in. When Wayland saved me, I finally didn’t feel lonely; for once in life I didn’t feel lonely.’ I said. It looked as though Bella was speechless. The others were quiet, probably listening to our conversation.
We hunted for about an hour. When they all seemed finished, we all headed back to the house. When we got in the house, I walked back to Wayland’s side; he pulled me close, he wrapped his arms around me, I laid my head on his shoulder, he kissed my check.
We all got to know each other. I told them what happened my first year as a vampire. ‘Without Wayland here, I don’t know what would’ve happened to me.’ I said. I felt Wayland wrap his arms around me.
