• Chapter Five: The Secret of the Pack
“So, what’s the news? You said there was something about my father’s killer that you needed to tell me. Did he come from the village, I noticed that Kino was missing. Is he behind this?” Lola was eager to get to the bottom of the mystery.
“No, Kino is on hunting duty. But the killer is from the village. Kino’s sister was banned recently for attacking Shadowpaw with a human weapon. We had no idea that she would try to kill your father. I am truly sorry.”
“Wait, you’re trying to tell me that the person that killed my father is Nosaka! This can’t be true, it can’t! We were best friend’s sense I found the pack when I was five!”
“I know, it was shocking to us too. She left this morning before dawn. She was the only one in the pack that wasn’t here or unsupervised and their isn’t another pack for miles. I’m telling you she’s the only one who fits that description that could have the skills to kill someone like your father.” Lola was clearly at a breaking point by now.
“So what happened? How did she attack Shadowpaw and why? I want to know, it could help me find a reason why she would kill my father.” Bloodfang had been shaking up until now. Bloodfang sat as he could no longer bear to stand.
“Do you really want to know? Do you really want to hear the story of how your best friend became a cold blooded killer? Is it really worth the broken heart?”
“Spare me the details. Just tell me what made her mad and what weapon she used. Please I’m only interested in the basics.” Lola wanted no details of her friends other personality.
“Fine. Kino got hurt by a moose when hunting. It was minor but Nosaka wouldn’t hear of it. She blamed Shadowpaw for not taking his wounds seriously. She also blamed you for not being there to help with the hunting as you always do when you visit. She had some how gotten a blade of some sort. It was small, but if Nosaka had used all of her force she would have killed Shadowpaw. Shadowpaw was punctured just above the stomach.”
“She blamed me for Kino’s injury? How was I responsible? I have always left moose to the elders. I would never take a moose at all, attempting to take on a moose alone is practically suicide! It was Kino’s stupidity that gave him that wound! How dare she blame me!” Heartfall walked in and helped calm down Lola.
It took until dinner to calm down Lola and finish explaining everything to her friends. The wolves had saved some of the steak that Lola had brought a few days ago during her last visit. They had no other food that Lola’s friends would be able to eat with their weak stomachs.
After dinner they had a party to celebrate the new pack members. Bloodfang also announced that Lola would be third in rank and will be treated with the highest of respect. Ryland became a hunter and Jack was given the rank of a cub seeing as he still acted as on. Olivia became Shadowpaw’s apprentice and Emi became an adviser of Heartfall. They all had a joyous time. They went to sleep when the moon was high in the sky and woke at dawn for their first lessons in the ways of the pack.
