• “What do you mean I have to watch over some human girl? I’m 30 years old frozen forever as a 17 year old. That only happens to vampires who are in their mid hundreds.” I told my father, who is the head of the council. This wasn’t supposed to happen yet, not at least for a hundred years or so. I’m too young to have a responsibility of watching over some random human girl. I didn’t even know who she was. I should have the right to pick who I fall in love with. Not some fortune telling 1000 year old vampire who is most likely crazy.

“That’s just how it happens Zachary. Your mother was once a human you know and I felt the same way you do now. I had to do the same thing you have to do now, keep watch over her and in time you and her will fall in love, turn her into a vampire, and become the new king and queen. It all works out fine.” He told me like he could predict the damn future.

“Yeah, but that is you and mom. You are nothing like me. I don’t want to watch over some human girl. I’ll never love her, so you might as well just give up.”

“No. That’s not how it works. It happens to every vampire that has ever lived, and you are no exception. It is not a choice, it is in our blood. All vampires have to do it. You leave tonight.”

“What? Are you kidding me? Tonight; as in today? Why tonight? Can’t you give me a few days?” If they just gave me a few more days I could think of a plan. I could run away, but that’s never done anyone any good. I will still need this human girl. There have been stories about vampires that ran away from it, but they all came back and lived happily ever after. Blah, blah, blah. I was sure I wasn’t anything like them, I’d find a way.

“Yes tonight. You will actually be leaving in a few minutes. Dreg will be taking you to her home and ECT. Her name is Rachael; she lives in a small town called Sharpsville.
She has no idea of you, so you will watch and protect her from a distance. Understood? No interfering with her life, unless she is in dire need of help. Oh and one more thing, absolutely no sucking her blood. Not yet of course. Not until it is time.”

“Whatever. I’ll go, but if she dies or something can I home?” I asked as if that was the plan. Of course I would probably never actually kill a human being on purpose, but if she somehow died then I wouldn’t have to do this.

“There is no possible way she will die with you watching over her. It will be impossible for you not to save her life if anything happens.” He paused looking at Dreg. Dreg is a 6”8, 350 lbs body guard/humble servant. He’s been in the eyes and ears of the royal family for centuries. Nothing surpasses his eyes. He’s one of my very closets friends, due to the fact that I don’t get out a whole lot without someone watching me. Dreg also looks a lot like me too. He has dirty blonde hair and dark blue eyes; we’re both Caucasian and have a similar slightly rounded chin. The only difference is that he looks like he’s in his late twenties and he looks like he bench presses everyday of his life since he was the age of 2, and I am medium built- unlike him. “You will leave now. Your belongings are packed and ready to go. Goodbye my son, I will see you when you come back with your new bride.” Father said as he dismissed Dreg and I.

I walked out of the council’s meeting hall and headed outside. It was dark. Just the way I liked it. Vampires can go out in the sunlight all they want, but most prefer the darkness.
