• Cebey lived in the world of fairy-tales and magic. Not that it exist in her time, but to her it was very, very real. To her elevators went up and down magically and microwaves were charmed into heating up for humans because they had done something bad in a past life. Cinderella lived two houses down with her prince, and most importantly fairies existed. As a mater-a-fact her best friend was one. Though she looked perfectly normal a thin girl with long dark hair and fair smooth looking skin, but secretly she could fly and sprinkle fairy dust, and her step-dad was completely and totally evil. Cebey loved her fairy friend, Grace and was always protecting her from her mother’s new found love, the evil Walter Wes a very grouchy business man that worked all day every day in a gray boxy building. Cebey didn’t see what Grace’s free wily mother that seemed would end up with a… rock star or artist or anything but a business man liked about him.
Walter Wes would always be trying to send Cebey’s only friend away to boarding school, but Cebey would not allow that she would persuade Mary, Grace’s mom that she needed Grace around for company, and help around the house when her husband was at work (all the time).
Walter disliked Grace for her fairy like qualities, her companion and optimism since he had none of his own. But he loathed Cebey he called her words like freak and Moron. He insisted to Mary That Cebey was a bad influence on Grace, Mary would take none of it; Mary loved Cebey like her own daughter, and Cebey loved her like a mother since she had never met her own and lived with her dad in a small apartment. Cebey couldn’t stand the stuffiness of it so she spent most of her time at Grace’s airy three story house. The only drawback was after seven o’clock Walter was home and always with something to complain about, usually something to do with Cebey. He really knew how to make you feel unwelcome.
It was on one of these days that Cebey’s adventure started, it started in a way that you wouldn’t even notice. When Walter came home one wet, rainy, Thursday, evening in there home town in Missouri, he had more complaints about Cebey being in the house then normal, Cebey often thought this was the time she was so post to leave but Mary reassured her that he was just grouchy from work, but Cebey wasn’t so sure. On that day Walter apparently had something to say that he didn’t want Cebey to hear he glared at her, making Cebey very uncomfortable until Mary snapped “go on” then he reluctantly told everyone “I have been promoted to Shuster and Shuster and been asked to move to New York” the reply to this was a very loud prominent “NO!” Walter made one last attempt “but it pays well and we could get a nice big-“ “NO!” was the reply again. Walter sighed dropping the proposal for then; he would bring it up again when Cebey was gone. The rest of the day continued uneventfully. Walter never got the chance to bring up New York again, for Cebey stayed for dinner than spent the night.
At school the next the next day Cebey was told she had to write a five page essay for Monday. She grumped through the rest of the day she had been looking forward to the weekend like she did every Friday because she would be able to spend time with her best and only friend.
At the end of the day Cebey lumbered towards her father’s car, disappointed not to be able to see Grace over the weekend. So Cebey was very surprised to see Grace sitting in her dad’s old Toyota Tercel, Cebey hurried over to see what was going on. Why wasn’t Mary here to pick up Grace? When Cebey got in she saw the look on Grace’s face and knew something was very, very wrong. “What happened?” Cebey questioned. “It’s my… my mom” Grace said in a voice that sounded like she would burst into tears “she… fell down the stairs and is in the hospital… she’s unconscious.” Cebey promptly started crying and hugging Grace. Cebey saw Mary as her mom too. “Were off to the hospital now” Michael, Cebey’s dad added. They drove on all crying, that was one good thing about Michael he wasn’t afraid of showing his feeling unlike some men. Being six-teen Cebey could and probably should have taken over the wheel after the seconded time they veered off the road. But she feared she would do no better for her eyes were also filled with tears and she had only had her license for a month.
They arrived at the hospital to find no Walter. He couldn’t part with his work to visit his dyeing wife. But this wasn’t a bad thing. They spent the whole rest of the day there talking to Grace’s unconscious mother.
Saturday Cebey decided she better start her essay if she wanted to go to the hospital Sunday. So she never saw Walter or Grace the whole day.
When Cebey wok Sunday morning she was very proud of her self for finishing her entire five page essay, it was a free choice essay Cebey had written about the existence of fairies, how they kept their existence a secret and what they could do that was special. So today she was completely free to spend the day at the hospital.
At around 7am Cebey pulled into the hospital driveway in her new car she had gotten about two weeks ago, and saved up for about two years. It was a used blue bug car. She had looked for a purple one but could find one.
Cebey walked into Mary’s hospital room and was shocked to see fully conscious and sitting up. “Where are Grace and Walter?” “I was hoping you would know I haven’t seen them since I fell”
Then it hit Cebey all at once. Grace would never leave her mother’s side intentionally, and Walter hadn’t visited Mary once. Then Mary and Cebey were in Cebey’s car drive about twenty miles over the speed limit luckily they never met a cop and were able to go strait to the house Cebey had been in more then the apartment she had lived in for more then ten years. They arrived to a wreck of a house, it had been rampaged there was nothing but lonely looking furniture. They were gone.
Cebey understood then Walter had never wanted Mary he had wanted Cebey best and only friend, her fairy friend, or if not fairy at least some magical quality, who knew to what lengths he would go to get it. Apparently Mary saw this too or she was really hurting, maybe stealing her from the hospital wasn’t the best idea. But when Cebey was about to leave to see if her assumptions were true Mary had demanded that she come too. So there they were standing before an empty house no longer a home.
“We have to go find them” Mary concluded. Cebey knew where they were “New York” then they were both in the house grabbing whatever they might need: tooth-brushes, changes of clothes, maps… Cebey grabbed the phone and dialed her home number it seemed to ring forever, until her dad’s voice said “we’re not home right now, feel free to leave a message and we’ll get back to you a soon as possible” Michael was probable sleeping he was known to sleep till 2pm.”Hi dad it’s me I’m going to spend the night at Grace’s, bye.” If Cebey’s voices sounded as panicked as she felt Michael would be suspicious, but Cebey had more pressing things to worry about then her dad.
After they had all the stuff they needed they were back in the car and speeding along the highway to the airport.
Thet arrived in New York at 3am. At that moment they both realized they were looking for a needle in a hay stack, there were so many people! Every where you looked people, people, people. They had no chance of finding them and Cebey knew it but they had to try.
Cebey and Mary check into the first hotel they saw. The hotel was called Astoria Hotel it was in the upper west side of Manhattan and a miracle that this was the one they had picked. The lady at the front desk had done all the normal question for getting the room: “where are you from? How long will you be staying? How will you be paying? And what is your last name?” for the last question was answered with Mary’s last name which was still Wes even though I wouldn’t be much longer. That’s what gave us the answer we needed to find Grace. “Oh… we already have a Wes checked in will you be sharing a room” their eyes both bugged, what luck “No, but what room number are they in” room #19 “thank you” Mary hurriedly thanked over her shoulder while Cebey and Mary both ran up the hall “what about your room” the lady at the front desk shouted at them.
Cebey and Mary ran at top speed to room 19 the door was locked but that wouldn’t stop Mary, she kicked the door with all her might, and the door flew open. “Wow.” As the door flew open they noticed that there was only one in the room, Grace was laying on her back on the bed looking at the ceiling. Immediately she sat up looking at them confusedly “what are you doing here?” she questioned them “we are rescuing you?” “Huh” Grace replied. Everyone in the room was extremely confused now. “We thought Walter took you to New York” Mary said. Grace that explained the madness to us “Oh when I discovered that he was taking me to New York we were already on the plane” Grace said to calmly for what she was saying “so I decided he would be better off as a mouse” she pulled out a cardboard box then and pointed to a large fat mouse sitting in the middle of the box looking at them with big watery eyes that seemed to be saying “let me out” no one was willing to grant this wish so he stayed there. “I tried calling to tell you where I was, and to come pick me up but you never answered” Grace shrugged there wasn’t enough money in little mousies wallet for a plane so I went to the first hotel I saw hoping that’s what you would too when you came looking for me. And here you are.”
“I have one last question” Mary said. “Can I throw him down the sewer?” “Of coarse that’s why I kept him so long, so you could do the honors” Grace replied.
Then Grace and Cebey fallowed Mary down the hall and into the streets to dispose of Mary’s X-husband.
And he lived happily ever after. aparently live in the sewers of Manhaten were well sweted for Walter Wes.
