• Chapter 1
My gaze bore into Leslie’s back while I attempted to will her to turn around and looked at me. Leslie… Leslie… turn around stupid… Nothing. I silently sighed, giving up on my signals. I would’ve just jabbed her in the back with my pencil if she weren’t so many seats away. So I slumped back into my seat, staring at the nearly blank black board. DETENTION! Written in big white letters, underlined. I wasn’t even supposed to be in detention. I was only in her because Mrs. Sawyer was an idiot, and when I told her she was an idiot she gave me detention. Okay, so maybe idiot wasn’t my exact word choice, but still.
I mean, come on, I wasn’t even the one to think it originally, it was Rachel. I just happened to blurt it out and bam! She gives me detention. How unfair was that?... of course I guess there was no way that Mrs. Sawyer could’ve known what was on Rachel’s mind…
I know, I know. I probably sound totally nuts, hearing thoughts and junk like that. And the truth is, when I first started hearing other voices in my head, I figured I was insane too. But, according to Rachel, I wasn’t. Her words for it were that we were “glitches.” Apparently it wasn’t just Rachel and me who could read each others thoughts. We were on the same thought planes, meaning that we could hear what the other was thinking. We could only hear limited thoughts, and we couldn’t hear from long distances. Also, as Rachel puts it, “Sorry Sophie sweetie, but your pretty pathetic when it comes to minds.” Or, put in English, there were people who could read my thoughts without me hearing theirs, or weird things like that. How Rachel knew all of this, I had no clue, but currently I wished she were here, just so I could have someone to talk to. I groaned, slumping further in my seat. Mrs. Sawyer glared at me, so of course I stuck my tongue out. Two more detentions probably, but I had nothing better to do after school anyway… that I knew of.
