• It was the perfect night. Selina and I sat on the silty sand of the lake, the starless reflection of the sky glaring up at us. The moon was so clear it was as if it was hung there, right in front of our faces.
Selina looked at me. Her brunette hair swung gently in the lakeside breeze, playfully covering her face. Her light blue eyes twinkled in the moonlight.
Suddenly she spoke, "Thomas, if I could be anywhere in the world right now, it would be here, with you."
I opened my mouth to speak, but she simply put her finger to my lips.
And we kissed. It wasn't one of those quick little "See you tomorrow!" kisses. It was a deep, passionate kiss. For half a minute we sat with our lips locked. We came apart panting. I hadn't had a kiss like that for years.
We leaned in to do it again, but something stopped us. The ground shook below us, sending tiny grains of sand flying up as high as our noses. The water rippled, distorting the once-flawless image of the moon. Selina and I looked around, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Until a jet of sand burst up from the ground, and fifty feet into the air. I instinctively grabbed my sword and charged in that direction. I was easily swept aside by... I can't say it was a hand, but something like it. More like a solidified mass of darkness. I looked up at the assailant to see what it was. My eyes told my brain what it was, and my brain replied "When's the last time you've seen an eye doctor?"
I had battled trolls, giants, and dragons, but I had never seen anything like this. What stood before me, in all of it's terribleness, was the Gate to Chaos.
