• As I sat down I felt the vampire teeth sprout from my clean gums. Mary stood beside me and asked, “Chrissie! You- I mean- you’re a vampire?!” I couldn’t answer. Even I didn’t understand what in the world I was. I felt the sudden urge to hurt something. I always enjoyed vampire stories, and sure I wanted to be one, but when I actually turned, I didn’t think it was that cool. It was so irritating.

I thought it was going to be so spectacular, but I ended up like this, sitting on a bench with my best friend, crying, and not having a clue of how this happened. I don’t even know who changed me. I mean I know that the person- thing was a male.

Mary grabbed for my purse as she said, “let’s go see who did this to you.” She pulled me towards the mall and I noticed that I saw people staring at me. I asked Mary if she saw them, but she just gave me a quick, “you must be crazy” look and shook her head no. I guessed it must be a vampire thing. Why is it that I can see them? I didn’t ask for this, I didn’t want this.

I suddenly had the urge to walk up to the elderly woman to my left and jump at her neck. I didn’t understand what was happening. Mary said, “I think I have an idea of who did this to you. It may be him.” She was pointing to the only “human” looking person to me. He was handsome and I couldn’t help but say, “He’s cute.”

He walked toward us. I didn’t know who he was, but then something popped into my mind. Tell her my name is Damien and I really need to speak with you; so don’t make a big scene, Chrissie.

“His name is Damien, may I go speak with him? It will only be a few seconds, I promise!” I couldn’t believe I just lied to Mary.

“Sure. Don’t be to long. I don’t want to trust him.”

Tell her she can trust me. I mean no harm.

“He means no harm. I’ll be right back.” I managed a smile and walked to the bench where “Damien” sat. He was the most beautiful thing ever.

“Hello, we need to talk.” Damien had a straight face on. It was completely serious. Intimidating.

“You think? Here I am, thinking about biting that lady’s neck, and you are just being, oh so calm! What am I? What are you? And how did I become this?”

I am a vampire, and so are you. I created you, and I would like you to accompany me on this quest. I see great potential and I am sorry about what I have done to you. Oh yeah, and I’m strong enough to read your mind- we have no secrets. Come on, try it. Read my mind.

The only thing I could think about was trying to read his mind. I somehow managed to whisper, whoa! How am I doing this? Can we go somewhere more private and less light. The light is very much irritating me skin. I smiled because I was shocked. Damien started smiling too, and I’m glad he did because I was starting to think he had no emotions at all.

“Is your name really Damien?” I managed to say as we walked into an alley outside the mall. I didn’t always like the dark, but for an obvious reason it felt like a second home now.

“Yes, Chrissie. Now, I need you to come with me to Valentine City, New Mexico, and help me reason with my father, head of all vamps,”- he was gesturing toward my fangs”- to allow new vampire’s into our cult because they are harmless.” Shock went through me. I couldn’t believe that he only changed me to help him with his mission. How selfish! I then realized that he could read my mind, so I pushed those thoughts out and remembered my first night as a vampire. It was cold and I had nowhere to go. I had just been kicked out of my home because I told my mother what I had become, and apparently, vampires killed her parents.

“I am sorry. I wouldn’t have done this if I thought it wasn’t necessary. I honestly didn’t know one of us had killed them. I will look it up and make sure the culprits/ culprit is arrested. I’m sorry for your lose.” His smile changed and he looked sad and irritated. “So will you help me?”

“Um… Sure? But only if you teach me all about the vampire community.” I looked down and noticed his hand before mine, I shook it, and walked with him towards the mall. He was smiling because he had a victory. “Oh yeah, can you help me with the mind reading thing?”

He smiled and we walked into the night. My new home. My new life.
