    The quick reference Handbook
    for surviving Zombies


    --------------------------Intro--------------------------

    Drought, famine, government collapse, mass hysteria, plague, global warming, war. Disasters and outbreaks are feared and have steps taken to avoid them. Books are written, shows are broadcast and speeches are made. The Zombie outbreak is a disaster less talked about. Found in games, movies, and books for entertainment proposes. The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks is a fun, fictional view on Zombies. He talks about a completely fictional virus named “Solanum” and lists its symptoms. His book goes on telling about Zombie attributes and how to survive the outbreak. While the majority of the tips in the guide are sound, the situation is still completely fictional, meant for an entertaining read, nothing more. This doesn’t mean that zombies are complete fiction. Edmund Wade Davis a noted anthropologist, author and photographer whose work has focused on indigenous cultures, had been intrigued with a man named Clairvius Narcisse a man supposedly had temporarily become a zombie slave, a semi-permanent induced psychotic delirium activated with local drugs.
    A massive Hollywood style Zombie outbreak is highly unlikely and may never happen. On the chance it does this book will arm you with knowledge, which may save your life. We will never have a completely accurate guide to Zombies, because it is impossible to know exactly how the virus would function or what the zombies attributes would be.
    This book will lay out the most probable scenarios and list possible types of zombies and how to deal with them. It may entertain you with solutions to a seemingly fictional predicament, but its true purpose is to prepare you for what might happen or to have to grab on the run if it does, to find a quick solution in an occurrence you would never thought possible. This is the quick reference Handbook for surviving Zombies.















    --------------------------Zombie Types--------------------------

    Who is to say how fast a zombie will be able to move? Who is to saw how smart or strong a zombie will be? These are things that we will not know until they exist, which may be to late. The following is a wide range of Zombie types and how to most effectively deal with them.




    Standard Zombies----------------------------------------------------


    Appearance: Pale or grey skin, missing limbs, extreme wounds, unfocused or even sunken in eyes, decaying flesh.
    It should not be hard to identify a Zombie. Be cautious as to not mistake an injured or sick person for a zombie and visa versa. This is important because un-educated people will believe the first zombies are just injured people and will rush to their aid, ensuring their demise.

    Senses: Whatever is functioning, mostly hearing.

    Threat: little 0 -[- - -]5 - - - - 10 extreme

    Strength: weak 0 -[- - - 5]- - - - 10 superhuman
    Although you may be able to easily push these zombies over, their grip is not something to be messed with. Their desire to only eat leaves their jaw and gripping strength at its zenith.

    Speed: crawl 0[- - - -]5 - - - - 10 fast sprint
    These zombies have horrible coordintion and skewed sences. it’s a challege for them to keep standing, a feat for them to stumble, and a miracle to run. Don’t take this for granted though, because those zombies that were fifty feet away can clear that gap faster than you may think.

    Thought: none [0 -]- - - 5 - - - - 10 minor intelligence
    The one and only thing on this zombies mind, its one and only instinct, is to eat fresh human meat. This being it will be easy to avoid or trick this zombie. For example If you were standing atop one building and the zombie another, and it sees you. It would walk at you, thinking only to get to you, it doesn’t consider any other factors. So it will walk right off the building.

    ---

    Defense against: Gun, bat-like object, avoidance.
    A well placed bullet to the head will usually stop any zombie in its tracts. Zombies do not need limbs or internal organs to pursue you, so do not waste ammo on the torso or extremities of the zombie.
    A simple bat, stick, or pole is not meant to beat the zombie to death, the only way that would be accomplished is if you scrambled or crushed its brain, instead use to knock the zombie onto its face and ensure a getaway since it will take a while for the zombie to right itself.
    The best method to deal with these zombies is to avoid them. They are slow and uncoordinated. Using a bike or your legs you should be able to easily maneuver scattered zombies, or even sneak by without alerting them.

    Defense safety: Home, store, mall, warehouse.
    If you have supplies just stay at home. Keep quiet, and turn of bright lights at night and you should be fine. These zombies have no thought process and if they even know you are in the house they do not know how to get to you. They wont know to break down a door or window, but there are chances of them hitting and breaking windows. To be safe bored up doors and windows.
    If you can get to a store with supplies do so. Be sure to bored up windows and make sure entrances are secure.
    If you have enough people with you bored up a mall or warehouse, both will have plenty of food and defense supplies. Just make sure to find every entrance and secure it.




    --Tip: Always have a backup plan if zombies enter your safe place. Have and exit or a retreat, like an attic or roof, last thing you want is to be trapped in a corner.



    --Tip: Swords, chainsaw, knives and other sharp slicing objects are not the best of choice. Yes they do not have ammo to worry about but they do have an edge, and the edge of a sword blade will dull with your slicing. And unless the blade is very sharp, and the person is very strong, it is unlikely you will decapitate the zombie in one swing. This may get your weapon stuck in the zombie and may leave you open for attack by the zombie with your sword in is neck.



    --Tip: Always have a backup plan if zombies enter your safe place. Have and exit or a retreat, like an attic or roof, last thing you want is to be trapped in a corner.





    Fast Zombies----------------------------------------------------

    Appearance: Standard

    Senses: Hearing and mostly sight.
    These zombies are able to run and use their eyes to hone in on their prey. They are also highly sensitive to loud and high pitched noises and may sometimes investigate such a noises as a car alarm, gun shot, or scream.

    Threat: little 0 - - - - 5[- - -]- 10 extreme

    Strength: weak 0 - - - [- 5 - -]- - 10 superhuman
    An constant adrenaline like attribute makes these zombies stronger than the average person.

    Speed: crawl 0 - - - -[5 - - - -]10 fast sprint
    They have better coordination making these zombies almost impossible to maneuver around. Once they see you they will run at you, some may slam into the dumpster while other may climb over it.

    Thought: none 0 - -[- -]5 - - - - 10 minor intelligence
    Some are smart enough to climb a chain link fence to get to you, others may smash a windows with their fists. There only thought is to eat you, but these zombies can figure out simple ways to get that done. For example If you were standing atop one building and the zombie another, and it sees you, if would run towards you and stop at the edge of its building. It wouldn’t be smart enough to take the stairs down to your building, but it would be smart enough not to leap off. It would probably realize you were out of reach and forget you.

    ---

    Defense against: Gun, projectiles, traps, sturdy object.
    You don’t want these zombies to get close to you, the best way to take them down is by some sort of projectile, of your good at archery an arrow in the head will drop a zombie. Also traps, stopping the zombie as its running at you by means of blocking its path, tripping it, slowing it down would be affective to buy you time to kill it or run.
    If you weren’t able to kill the zombie before it gets to you, a well timed swing of a metal bat or a sledgehammer to its head will bring it down quickly.

    Defense safety: High rise building, mall.
    Windows are your enemy, most stores and house have to many breakable areas for the zombie to enter. And high rise building such as an office building would make a good defense with resources your main worry.


    Evolving zombies----------------------------------------------------

    Appearance: Standard, some may change appearance as they evolve.
    These zombies grow evolve rapidly, every time they transfer the virus, in ways to better the zombification of the planet.

    Senses: Standard

    ---

    Threat: little 0 - - - - 5 - - [- - 10] extreme
    The threat is determined by how far they have evolved and in what areas. As long as they cant infect new hosts they can evolve. Survivors must not only focus on survival but killing the most evolved zombie before it can pass on its virus to a new host. The potential of their “zombie evolution” makes them the most dangerous group.

    Strength: weak 0 - - [- - 5 - - - -]10 superhuman
    Evolving zombies will start out much like standard zombies. After a few weeks of infection, and after a zombie bites a person and that new zombie bites person, and that happens a few dozen times, their strength will increase, some may grow claws or extra muscle through “zombie evolution“.

    Speed: crawl 0 - -[- - 5 - - -]- 10 fast sprint

    Thought: none 0 - -[- - 5 - - -]- 10 minor intelligence
    You may find these zombies stop moaning, and pick up their feet when they run. Also they would know to break a door or run around an obstacle to get to you, they may even leap of the rooftops onto unsuspecting survivors below.

    ---

    Defense against: Much like fast zombies.
    Close quarters combat is not favored here. Try and take out the zombies before they get that close. Find ways of killing large groups like with explosives. Do not use fire or fire based weapons.

    Defense safety: High rise, secluded location.
    Defense is key. They will come in waves and with strength that will be overwhelming. Get a solid defense or run to the countryside or a mountain top.


    Smart zombies----------------------------------------------------

    Appearance: Only discoloration.
    These zombies walk more upright and have less battle scars. Making them the most difficult to differentiate between the living and un-dead.

    Senses: All
    These zombies will utilize all of their senses.

    Threat: little 0 - - - - 5 -[- - -]10 extreme

    Strength: weak 0 - - [- - 5 -]- - - 10 superhuman
    Smart zombies are no stronger that the average survivor, if anything they are a little weaker.

    Speed: crawl 0 - - - -[5 - -]- - 10 fast sprint
    Fast zombies can run, just not very fast.

    Thought: none 0 - - - - 5 - - -[- 10] minor intelligence
    Their smarts is what makes them so dangerous. They wont use any weapons, or talk to you. But they will hide and wait for you to leave your safety. They will not attack if outnumbered, they will run away. And they travel in large groups, often lead by an unelected leader. Smart zombies may learn things from watching survivors.

    ---

    Defense against: Guns, axes, explosives, traps
    When in close range a smart zombie may retreat when you inflict damage on it, the axe is a good weapon for smart zombies because if its large bright presence and strong crippling swing.
    Explosives would clear a group just like any zombie.
    Try to set a trap in areas you may think the zombie may try to enter from other than the basic entrance. Just stay one step ahead of the smart zombies thinking.


    Defense safety: Like fast zombies
    The standard defense wont quiet do. These zombies will find ways to get in, they are capable of opening doors and crawling under things. For example If you were standing atop one building and the zombie another, and it sees you. It would get to the bottom floor, exit its building, enter yours, and climb the stairs to your location.


    --------------------------Offence--------------------------

    When faced with zombies you may have the urge to go on the offensive. Go outside and kill ever zombie you see, lock and load and pump the lead out into the undead. This is one if the most unwise decisions. Doing this will probably attracted more attention to your location, you may end up being trapped or outnumbered. Even if your not you are wasting valuable ammo. Guns should only be fired when necessary. Even if you want to just get an axe and hack at zombies, there’s’ a chance you may slip up, so better play it safe and hold off on your killing rampage.
    Only go on the offence when it is the defense. Only attack to survive. This occasion may arise to protect your safe place, or when clearing a path out on a resource hunt. Chances are that there will not be hordes of zombies, but scattered ones. This is of coarse depending on where you living. The less crowded and populated the city, the better chance you wont have to face a zombie horde, and the less ammo you have to waste meaning a longer stockpile, meaning a longer survival.
    Skill is a large factor, if you are physically out of shape your chances of survival plummet. The better shape you are in and the more skill you have with the weapons of your choice, greatly increases your survive-ability. If you have a gun, but have horrible aim, you will still get eaten. If you have a stick, but you know how to use it, you may survive. Skill is an important factor and training, physically, and mentally, should be seriously considered to better you for the zombie invasion, and just to improve the quality of your life.
    On the occasions you must fight zombies, here is a list of basic weapons, where might they be found, and how to use them properly against zombies.
