    Prologue

Knowing what was going to occur, Jane Masters tried to retreat from the battle field, looking around frantically for Nicholas Grandstone. All she could think about was the bomb going off, and destroying everything in its path.
"Nicholas!" She called desperately, whirling in different directions. Her eyes were wide with fright, she knew she only had minutes.
"Nicholas!" She called again, louder this time. Her blue eyes looked around the clearing, watching all the tragic deaths and wondering why she had even come here in the first place. Nicholas, and the fighter plane overhead were what crowded her thoughts.
Jane's eyes rested on a formerly green hill, now charred black from a fire. She saw her Nicholas atop, looking for something. She sprinted with all her might towards the hill. The vision of the bomb being dropped only became clearer, and more frightening.
Closing her eyes tight, she focused only on moving her legs as fast as she could. She could hear the yells, and even some children crying. There were children? She ignored that fact. And opened her eyes, only to find she was at the top of the hill. She was next to Nicholas, only a few meters away. He was jogging towards her. Jane would have grinned in better circumstances.
"Nicholas!" She said, grabbing him in a quick embrace.
"Hello Jane." He said, oddly calm, as always.
"We have to get out of here!" Jane said, pulling away to get a better view of Nicholas's hard expression. She gazed at him, eyes wide and desperate. He chuckled. Why was he chuckling?
"Of course. You have to get out. I'm fine." He said calmly.
"What?" Jane asked loudly, eyes widening more in fright. He couldn't stay here.
She grabbed his wrist, only having moments now.
"We don't have time for this!" She screamed, tugging on him, feeling the tears coming.
Nicholas shook his head. He smiled. He was much too calm. Why? Jane would nebver know.
She tugged, and pulled. He was like stone. He wouldn't budge, he was like stone. Why was he so hard to move? She felt hot tears streaming down her cheeks. Nicholas shook her hand off with ease.
"Go!" He yelled, pushing her down the hill. Jane stumbled down the hill, silent. She gave him a pained, confused, and desperate look.
And, like her selfish self, she ran into the depths of the forest, leaving her love behind.
