• Bryin continued on each day as if his brother hadn’t become a spirit. I visited often and avoided the subject, yet it ate away at me when I thought of his pain. But one day he didn’t have the time to think about the pain of his brother’s death.

I entered Bryin’s home and he instructed me to sit on the armoire. As I sat down his sat on the couch in front of the chair and looked straight at me. His eyes were serious as he spoke to me slowly. “My mother decided that I marry in the RedLands to Fireo Yutsmodbirdyoyer.” I didn’t understand why, but he explained why his mother decided suddenly, and it made sense. Once one dies, another is born.

I waited a month for Bryin’s wedding. I didn’t have time to go to the RedLands anymore, since I was busy collected animal skins to sell. I wanted to be able to afford a dress appropriate for such an event. Then I got just enough money to buy it-a presentable dress to wear at an event such as this one. It was pretty, but plain. I loved the dress, and practiced braiding my hair with flowers and leaves. These were all distractions, though, and it was finally time-Bryin’s wedding.

I entered the chapel then sat down near the front row, looking at the expressions of the fearful people near the priest. I heard the murmurs.
“Where is my son? He cannot miss my daughter’s wedding that is insane!” “We cannot disappoint Fireo on this special day.” “Nobody knows their ways around the GreenLands, he’s surely lost.” Suddenly the priest asked something to Bryin. Bryin shook his head, and then searched the crowd for a face. Then his eyes stared right into me. He motioned me to come up front, and I did so, ignoring the awkward stares I got from the crows. I stood next to him, letting him whisper something important in my ear. “Could you help us?” I nodded, and then listened to the story.

Bryin’s wife-to-be couldn’t get married without all of her family there-as tradition states. Her brother was gone and in the GreenLands-meaning that somebody with a good knowledge of the GreenLands was supposed to find him-the only person available being me. So off I went, going to search for a young adult 19 years of ago, named Teyro.
