• "Remember when we used to make fun of the Crisis?"
    "Haha, yep."
    "I miss those days . . . "

I wake up next to the love of my life, Abby.
    "Morning, Sleepyhead."
    "Mmmm . . . "

Abby finally gets up and dressed after twenty minutes of begging, pleading, and coaxing.
Then we're back on the road.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

The Crisis happened about a month ago. A secret science organization accidentally released an unfinished experiment injected with a lethal virus.
The number infected has been rising ever since.
Now the uninfected are now hiding in outposts, where they have treatments, or just moving on their own. Like us.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

"Are we there yet?" She asks.
    "Just 137 miles."
    " . . . "

I laugh just to cheer her up.
Although she's like this right now, I know she likes road trips.
Especially in a custom made Ferrari.

Actually, we're going to Florida to see Abby's cousins.
Even though I'm a bit dubious, Abby seems certain they're not infected.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

We've been driving for about a half an hour now when all of a sudden everything goes wrong.

"Watch out!" Abby screams just as a goup of infecteds run towards out car with their long gray arms clawing at the air.
I do my best to swerve out the way but we end up flying out of the car.
    "The guns!"
Now we're in the middle of multiple infecteds.

When we were finally able to pushed them back we're gasping for breath, glad that we weren't bitten.
    Until---

    " . . . Nick?"
    "Yeah?"
    "Nick . . . "
"What's up?" I turn around and see a cresent shaped scar on the side of her stomache.
My eyes go wide and time stops. Then everything rushes back and I'm moving as fast as i can.

"Get in the car, there should be an outpost somewhere in the next ten miles."
"I don't think I have that long." Tears well up in her eyes and he scar starts to turn blue.
    Not a good sign.
"No! You can. You have to."

I know things are getting worse when I hear her gasp in pain.
I move to get her in the car, but she refuses.
    "Leave me here."
"What are you talking about?! Hurry, please" I'm begging now, "If we could move west fast enough we might meet someone."
    "Or more infected."
"Abby, just please get in the car." I open the door and wait.
When I hear a sigh of defeat I know I have a chance of saving her.

    Then . . .

    "I'm sorry Nick . . . and . . . I love you."

The sound of a gun firing snaps me back to reality.

    "Abby . . .?"

As her body crumples to the ground, I run, not believing my eyes.
    "No! No . . . oh please Abby . . ."
I kneel next to her waiting for her to get up and give me one of her radiant smiles, but nothing happens.

So I just sit there, crying. Then I am done.
I curl up to her, "Remember when we used to make fun of the Crisis? Haha, I miss those days . . . "

    BANG.
