• CHAPTER 4

Stephanie wakes up in the hospital bed, around five in the morning. She’s in the hospital gown and has a hospital bracelet around her wrist. She sits up, with her back aching very badly. She groans slightly and looks around. As she’s about to get up Martha enters the hospital bed.

“Dear, God…” Martha said softly, walking up to Stephanie and gives her a hug, “are you ok, Stephanie?” Martha asked. Stephanie had no idea what happened. She looks at her Martha for a minute then nods.

“What happened…?” Stephanie asked. Martha sits on the bed near Stephanie.

“I don’t know,” Martha replied, “Your father saw you passed out on the basement floor, we both thought you had a stroke…”

Stephanie thought for a minute ‘What was the shadow? What happened after?’ Stephanie had never seen anything like that in her life before. She was hoping that would be the LAST time she would see it.

A knock on the door is heard and Stephanie’s doctor comes in.

“Hey Stephanie,” the Doctor said, forcing a smile, “How are you?”

Stephanie doesn’t reply. She just looks at the doctor with a blank expression then looks at Martha. The Doctor clears his throat and continues, “Umm, Martha, if you can, there’s something we have to show you.”

Martha looks at Stephanie. “I’ll be right back…”

Stephanie nods slowly and Martha and the Doctor both leave the room. The Doctor and Martha meet up with Peter who was waiting outside the lab room. The Doctor has the folder with the test results.

“What happened, Doctor?” Peter asked. The Doctor opens up the folder.

“Well, I have some very good news…and some very unusual news…” he started, “The good news is, the cancer cells in Stephanie’s body are starting to decrease by 5.7%.” That brought a huge smile to Martha and Peter’s face, “but, there’s something that seems very…unusual.”

“Unusual?” Peter asked, “What do you mean?”

“Well,” the Doctor started, “it seems here that when she passed out…there were symptoms that her heart had stopped for about an hour…she should have been dead when the ambulance had arrived…it’s very strange that the next hour her heart stops she just wakes up again.”

Those words had Martha in tears already; she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

“How do you know that?” Peter asked, barley keeping calm.

“It says here that an extensive amount of heart cells had died,” the Doctor said, “and they’re still gone. I’m surprised Stephanie was able to remember to talk, I’m surprised she knows who you guys still are…we don’t know how it happened.”

Martha cries softly, resting her head on Peter’s shoulder.

“Is…this something we have to be worried about?” Peter asked.

“Well as of right now, we don’t know,” the Doctor replied, “We’re going to run a few more tests and we’ll let you know if she can go home.”

Peter and Martha nod. The Doctor forces a smile and walks away. Peter then hugs Martha really tight.

“You see?” Peter said, “Stephanie made it…she’s going to be okay.” Peter almost had tears in his eyes. “The cancer cells are decreasing and before you know it she’ll be back to normal.”

Inside the hospital room, Stephanie is looking down, not knowing she literally died and came back to life. As she was still thinking what that shadow was, Peter and Martha enter the room. Stephanie looks and smiles a bit.

“Hey, you!” Peter said, “How are you holding up?”

“I’m doing alright; I’m not dead or in jail.” Stephanie giggled and sat up more and faced towards Peter and Martha. Martha sits next to Stephanie as Peter sits on the chair nearby.

“Good news…” Martha started, “Your cancer cells are going away…”

Stephanie smiled, “Wow…really? Do they know how?”

“No,” Martha answered, “but you’re going to be okay…you’ll be okay in no time.” Martha hugs Stephanie as she smiles and hugs back. Stephanie really didn’t care why the cancer was disappearing; it was something she had hoped to happen for a very long time. She was happy to finally hear some good news.

A day has passed and Stephanie was released from the hospital. All the tests came out okay and she was able to go home. The cancer has decreased even more which felt like a real blessing for Martha.

That night, Stephanie was in her room, getting ready to go to the store. She put on her fitted hoodie, and let her hair out. She grabs the remote to turn her TV off; when she looks at the screen she notices the devil in a cartoon. He was luring three monkeys into his cave by making a trail of peanuts and singing. Whatever he was doing, it was getting those monkeys’ attention, and they were falling for it. She stares at the screen and just turns the TV off.

She walks downstairs to where Martha and Peter. Peter is catching up on work on his laptop and Martha was taking groceries out of the bag.

“You’re going now?” Martha asked, continuing to take the food out of the bags.

“Yeah, I’ll be back soon.” Stephanie replied. She exits the house.

Stephanie walks inside of a small smoke shop near the city. The store was quiet; it was about thirty minutes away from her house. She walks over to where they had the incent section and grabs two packs and goes to the register and pays for them. Stephanie thanks the man as she walks out.

As she walks toward the parking lot, which was a couple minutes away from the store, she sees a homeless man staring at her, sitting on a bench near the street by himself. She noticed the big bag of clothes he had right next to him. He had a full white grown beard with very glassy eyes, which scared her a bit. Stephanie doesn’t really mind him until he stops her by shouting a bit. Stephanie looks at him and he puts his small jar out, full of pennies and nickels. Stephanie sighs a bit and starts digging through her pockets but suddenly the man drops the jar. Stephanie looks at him as he looks like he’s having a panic attack.

“You…you..!” The homeless man stuttered. Stephanie looks at him, very confused. She backs up a few steps as the wind starts to pick up. Leaves scrape across the sidewalk, around Stephanie’s feet, and a flash of lightning lights up the night sky.

The homeless man suddenly takes out a Holy Bible. Stephanie flinches and watches him. ‘What is he doing?’ Stephanie thought. Stephanie then remembered on how she ripped up the Bible Martha had given her and broke the rosemary beads. She didn’t understand what was going on.

The man opens the Bible, puts the pages to his face and starts mumbling something to himself. The wind picks up more and the branches on the trees start moving. Stephanie looks around and sees the shadow zoom by the brick wall. Stephanie gasps and looks around. There was no one else in sight. Stephanie backs away more.

The man starts to talk louder and faster, as if he was saying a prayer. Stephanie stares at him and she suddenly starts to sweat. She was feeling very angry all of the sudden. The man was saying a prayer.

“Our father who art in heaven, hallowed by thee name,” the man yelled, “Thy kingdom come, thou will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven…”

Stephanie starts to sweat even more.

“Stop it…” Stephanie said through her teeth getting very angry, as if something inside of her was about to snap.

“Give us this day,” the man yelled, “our daily bread, and forgive those who trespass…” The man continued with the prayer as another flash of lightning is seen. Stephanie starts to sweat even more and she looks around, starting to hear voices. “Stop it…!” Stephanie cried.

Suddenly, she looks at the man and sees he has no eyes, and the skin from his face is scraped off. Stephanie screams and runs away, dropping her bag. She starts running through the alley ways as it begins to rain. As Stephanie is running she sees graffiti of Hell and demons on the brick walls and people burning. Stephanie starts crying and panicking at the same time, she had no idea what was going on. She then runs out of the alley and runs down another street, that looked abandoned. She sees more homeless people around a fire, trying to stay warm. She starts for them.

“Help, please!” Stephanie cried out. The homeless family turns to face her and they’re faces slowly form into bleeding skulls, hissing. Stephanie screams and runs down the street as she sees the shadow zoom past the walls, but looked as if it grew a lot bigger in size. She looks to the side and sees a church with the doors open. Stephanie quickly runs to the church.

“Somebody, please!” Stephanie called out, desperately, “Please help me!!” She runs inside the church and runs to the large statue of Jesus on the cross that’s right in the center of the wall, right in front of the priests’ staffs. Stephanie stares at the statue of Jesus and kneels down, and screams. She started hearing screeching noises in her head.

“Stop!” Stephanie cried out, holding her head. She then starts getting very dizzy and everything slowly starts getting dark. Stephanie’s eyes roll in the back of her head and she passes out right in the middle of the church. A tear drop slowly comes out of the statue of an angel, in the far corner and falls on the floor, as the laughing hyena noise is heard once again.

“Stephanie…” A faded voice called to her. She heard the voice echo and as the voice called her name again. Everything was blurry but started to come together. Stephanie wakes up in her room with Peter sitting next to her. Stephanie jolts up and moves her back toward the wall, panicking.

“Stephanie, Stephanie…!” Peter said, “What’s wrong?”

Stephanie looks around, her eyes widened.

“A…Am I home…?” Stephanie asked looking around. She then locks eyes with Peter. “D-Daddy..?”

“Honey, it’s me…” Peter said very calm, moving a bit closer, “It’s Dad…what happened to you?”

Peter moved closer and softly stroked her cheek. Stephanie looked all around her room once more. Nothing was out of the ordinary, same old bed, same old desk near the window, everything looked the same. Stephanie then hugs her father very tightly, crying.

“I don’t know what happened, Daddy,” Stephanie sobbed, “I don’t know what happened, I’m so scared…I don’t know what’s going on!”

Peter hugged Stephanie very tight as he fought back tears. “You’re okay, Stephanie…you’re with me now, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

Stephanie had never experienced something like this. In her mind, this was a whole lot worse than dealing with the cancer every day. She had no idea what was happening to her.

Downstairs, Martha is in the living room, walking in circles, trying to think. It looks like she has a lot on her mind. She stops and asks “What do you think happened to my daughter…?”

She turns her head to two priests who are sitting on her couch. One priest had grey hair, and looked like he was in his late fifties. His name is Father Sinclair. His partner, in his late forties was holding a Holy Bible under his arm, with glasses and black hair. They had both found Stephanie passed out in the church; they were the only ones in the church.

“Well, I don’t really know for sure,” Father Sinclair started, “you said your daughter has been a cancer patient for a while now, correct?”

    Martha nods.

“My partner, Father Nathaniel had seen what happened,” Father Sinclair started explaining, “We were going to call the police as soon as we saw what had happened, but…the presence in the room…we felt a very strange presence, as if something…dark and evil was there with her.”

Martha’s eyes widen, as she sits down across from them.

“Did you see the mark on her arm?” Father Sinclair asked.

“Mark? What do you mean mark?” Martha asked, getting worked up.

“It seems as if…something attacked her.” Father Nathaniel said.

From upstairs, Peter notices a claw scratch mark on her arm. His eyes widen as it looks like whomever-or whatever scratched her, it seemed very dangerous.

“That’s the thing,” Father Nathaniel added, “As you can see, there are no zoos, so surely a wild animal couldn’t have attacked her. There are no pounds or adoption centers. A dog or a cat couldn’t have scratched her with the size of that scratch. There’s no way.”

Martha looks at the two priests, frightened.

“As we all know, a human couldn’t have done that either,” Father Sinclair stated.

“What are you trying to say?” Martha asked, trying to get to the point.

Father Sinclair and Father Nathaniel look at each other for a moment.

“I’ve been a priest for many, many years,” Father Nathaniel said, “and never have I thought I would see something like this. We might be dealing with a very evil spirit at the moment.”

Martha doesn’t believe what she’s hearing. “Are…are you serious?” Martha asked them.

    They both nod.

“Evil spirit as in what?” Martha asked, ready to cry, “there’s no possible way we can be dealing with a-“

    “Demon.” Father Sinclair interrupted.

Martha looks at Father Sinclair in shock and sits up, shaking her head.

“No…” Martha said quietly, “I have ALWAYS kept my faith in the Lord, I pray every single night before I go to bed, and you’re telling me a demon could be threatening my daughter?”

“You might have kept faith,” said father Nathaniel, “but has your daughter kept faith in the Lord?”

    Pause.

Martha stops and looks at the two priests. She holds back tears and began, “I had told my daughter…I told Stephanie to try praying every night. I even gave her a bible; her deceased brother gave her rosary beads when she was just two years old!”

“Something must have happened then,” Father Sinclair said, standing up, “either what we’re dealing with is not really a demon, or you just have to try and accept that your daughter has given up hope recently.”

Before Martha could reply, Peter walks down the stairs and walks into the living room. He notices Martha crying.

“What’s going on here?” Peter asked, walking over to Martha.

“They believe we could be dealing with…a very evil spirit.” Martha said quietly, not wanting to believe it.

“Please…sit down and we’ll explain.” Father Nathaniel said. Peter and Martha both look at each and they both sit down, holding hands.

“Peter,” Father Sinclair started, “You said that Stephanie passed out the other night in the basement, and the Doctor had said Stephanie should’ve been dead, is that correct?”

Peter slowly nods as Martha softly weeps next to him.

“During that night, you had told me the Doctor said her heart cells had decreased a lot,” Father Sinclair continued, “how would that be possible to survive if Stephanie had been dead for an hour already?”

Pause. Father Sinclair turns to Father Nathaniel and nods.

“Stephanie must’ve…seen something that night.” Father Nathaniel started, “the truth is, Stephanie was supposed to be dead, and Stephanie isn’t supposed to be alive.”

    Long pause.

“But…” Father Nathaniel continued, “The Devil targets those who lose ALL faith in God, not even the slightest of faith can be there in order for the Devil to have interest.”

Upstairs, Stephanie is rocking back and forth, thinking of what happened. She suddenly feels a very bad pain on her shoulder, where the mark appeared. She grunts slightly as the claw wounds start to bleed a little bit.

“The Devil…had probably kept Stephanie from dying, even though she had never asked to be saved, or wanted anything to do with demons or the Devil himself,” Father Nathaniel continued, “The Devil had probably been longing for a soul like hers, a soul with no faith in God, a soul with no ray of hope. That’s what he thirsts for.”

Martha looks at them in complete shock with tears.

“In this case,” Father Sinclair continued, “the Devil would send out his Demons…to re capture her soul.”

“No!” Martha said, standing up, “I can’t accept what you’re saying, this can’t be right!”

“You can’t choose whether to accept the truth or not if you want what’s best!” Father Nathaniel said, standing up as well. “The claw mark, the loss of heart cells, what else could this mean?”

“I think we should wait until we see or hear any more signs of this…demon thing you’re saying.” Peter said.

Father Sinclair and Father Nathaniel both look at each other, then look at Martha and Peter.

“That’s probably a better idea,” Father Sinclair said, “However, would you like us to stay? Just in case we’re dealing with something that could possibly be evil…and dangerous?”

Those words almost had Martha burst into tears but she collected herself and took a deep breath.

“Let me and my wife discuss this for a minute,” Peter said, “come on honey, let’s go to the kitchen.”

Peter and Martha walk to the kitchen. Peter sits down on the stool near the island and Martha rests her elbows on the island, holding her head with her hands, letting out a deep sigh.

    Pause

“So…what do you want to do?” Peter asked, not knowing what else to say.

“I don’t know, honey,” Martha replied, “I mean, do you possibly think that we could actually be dealing with something like this?”

Martha stands straight and hurries to sit next to Peter.

“We need to be sure that this isn’t just something we’re exaggerating.” Peter said, turning to Martha, “Should we trust them?”

“They’re priests,” said Martha, “but, if this is just some sort of way to get money, they’re not having it.”

Peter had never seen Martha so stressed and worried in his life. Peter didn’t know what to believe either, it seemed very hard to believe that they could be doing an exorcism on Stephanie. It felt so unreal to him.

Upstairs, Stephanie is in the bathroom, undressing with the shower running. The hot water makes the bathroom foggy a bit. She puts her towel on the rack, opens the door to the shower and gets in. The bathroom had a separate tub and shower, Stephanie never really liked taking baths.

As she got in, she let the hot water run down her body as she closes her eyes. She reaches for the knob and turns the water on even hotter. A lot was on her mind, a hot shower was always the answer for Stephanie to forget about things for the moment.

She puts her hands on the shower wall and puts her head under the running water so the water can go down her back. As she goes to reach for the soap, she suddenly hears a low moan from a distance. She quickly turns her head to see what it was. She creaks open the shower door and sticks her head out slowly. She doesn’t see or hear anything. Stephanie then just closes the door again and continues with her shower.

Downstairs, Martha and Peter hear the water running, knowing Stephanie is in the shower. Peter turns his attention to Martha.

“So what should we tell them?” Peter asks.

Martha thinks for a minute then goes for her purse. She opens it up and takes out her cell phone.

“Who are you calling?” Peter asked, getting up from the seat. Martha doesn’t answer; she just dials a number and puts the phone to her ear. She looks at Peter with a real serious look on her face; Martha wanted to get to the bottom of what was happening.

“Andrea?” Martha said, once she had a hold of her, “Yeah, its Martha, is your cousin still around?”

Peter watched Martha as she was listening to Andrea’s reply.

“No, everything’s not okay,” Martha admitted, “but if you can, can you please bring Andrew over with his equipment? It’s urgent; it has something to do with Stephanie.”

Peter slowly walks up to Martha.

“As soon as possible,” Martha replied. She waited for Andrea to reply and responded, “Right now? Okay, that’s great come as quickly as possible. Alright thanks, bye.”

Martha hangs up the phone, and then looks at Peter.

“This is for our daughter,” Martha said, “We have to do whatever it takes to protect her, I’m not going to lose her like how we lost our son…”

They both hug, and Peter takes a deep breath.

“She’s going to make it,” Peter said, “I know she will…” He closes his eyes and embraces with her.

Martha and Peter go to the living room and sit down across from Father Sinclair and Nathaniel.

“I’m having a friend come over,” Martha began, “He works with equipment that can…detect if there are any spirits anywhere. It’s what he does for a living.”

Father Sinclair nods, “Yes, that’ll be helpful.” He said.

“Once he comes, we can talk about what we can do, and we’ll take it from there.” Father Nathaniel said, “Because the Devil is NOT something to just ignore. If he wants something, he will be sure to get it. That’s where we need to be careful.”

Peter and Martha nod as they both hold hands.

In the bathroom upstairs, Stephanie’s eyes are closed, as she’s letting the water run down her back. All what was on her mind was what she went through a few hours ago. She didn’t know if she was dreaming or had a nightmare, she didn’t know if she was sleepwalking. She was hoping she would never have to go through that ever again. She then started thinking about her brother, and all the happy times she had with him. From waking up to him in the morning when they were kids going to school; to just having a movie night, thinking of anything that had to do with Brandon made Stephanie cope more.

As she went for the shampoo, she heard the groan again, but this time it sounded a lot closer and louder. Stephanie turns her head, scared with her eyes widened.

“Hello?” She called out. She didn’t get a reply. As she goes to turn the water off she hears tapping on the glass door of the shower. Stephanie pauses and her heart begins to race faster. The tap sounded as if someone with long nails was doing the tapping. She slowly turns her head and sees a faded shadow within the fog. She stares at it and suddenly, a long haired blooded man with wounds on his face with no eyes, his cheek pressed up against the door is tapping on the glass.

Stephanie’s eye widen as she breathes even more heavy, and the glass of the door suddenly shatters and the door breaks down. Stephanie screams, falls down and hits her head on the metal knob of the shower.

    Downstairs, they heard her scream.

“Stephanie!!” Peter yelled he quickly rises and runs up the stairs. Martha quickly follows as the priests suddenly quickly stand up. Peter busts open the door to the bathroom and sees Stephanie lying in the shower, hurt.

“Oh my God…” he quickly goes to her, turns the water off and Martha enters the bathroom.

    “What happened..?!” Martha exclaimed.

“Martha, just help me get her to the bedroom.” Peter said as he carries Stephanie and leaves the bathroom.

Peter opens Stephanie’s bedroom door with his foot and rests Stephanie on her bed, pulling the covers over her.

“Is she ok?” Martha asked, very worried.

“Yeah she’s fine,” Peter said. Stephanie holds her head with her hand, where she hit her head.

“Stephanie, what happened?” Martha asked, sitting by her side.

“I…I don’t know…I don’t know what’s going on…” Stephanie said, very scared. Martha and Peter felt very helpless, and as of now, they felt as if they needed Father Sinclair and Father Nathaniel very badly. A doorbell is heard.

“It’s probably them…” said Martha. Peter nods.

“Get Stephanie some clothes, I’ll answer the door.” Peter said, and leaves the room.

Peter goes downstairs, as Father Nathaniel and Sinclair are waiting in the foyer, next to the door. Peter opens it and he sees a tall man, with black hair and green eyes before him. He had a suitcase, a camera in one hand, a stand in the other and Andrea was carrying some type of small machine.

“Hey guys, please come in.” Peter said, opening the door more, walking out of the way.

“Nice to meet you.” The man said, “I’m Andrew.”

“Nice to meet you too, Peter here.” Peter replied.

Andrew and Andrea walk in the house.

“Where can I put this stuff?” Andrew asked.

“You can just put it in the living room, right near the couches.” Peter replied.

Andrew and Andrea walk in the living room and set everything down near the couch the priests were sitting in. Andrea notices the two priests and then looks at Peter.

“Is everything okay?” Andrea asked, “How’s Stephanie?” Peter walks in the living room with both Fathers.

“Could be worse than we thought…” Peter said, “This is Father Sinclair and Father Nathaniel. They’re both here so they could help us; they think they have an idea on what’s going on.”

Andrea looks at both fathers and introduces herself then introduces them to Andrew.

“So…what’s going on here?” Andrew asks, taking a seat on the couch. Andrea sits next to him.

“We think we could be dealing with an exorcism here,” Father Sinclair replied, “from what I’ve been hearing with Stephanie’s conditions, her loss of faith in God, it could be the answer. We’re not so sure yet though.”

Andrea then remembers how Stephanie was questioning on why God has put her through so much. Andrea couldn’t believe what she was hearing; the Stephanie she knew wouldn’t have given up for anything.

“Is this…serious?” Andrea asked, not wanting to believe it.

“We don’t know for sure,” Father Nathaniel replied, “that’s why we had told Peter and Martha we have to check just to be sure.”

“Well,” Andrew began, “I’m guessing why I was called down here?”

    Peter nods.

“The equipment I have here is very good,” Andrew started, “the radio I have here will track any sounds or voices the spirits might be making. It will even translate it at times if the machine can pick up something good.” He takes out a small machine that looked like a radio, “My little beeper here will tell us how close the spirit can be. If it’s close enough it’ll start beeping like crazy.”

Peter sits down next to Andrea.

“And this machine…” Andrew, said, taking it out, “will determine how evil the spirit is. It almost works like a lie detector test does, but it’ll tell us how evil the spirit is.”

    “That’s pretty impressive.” Peter said.

“I know.” Andrew said with a smirk.

Upstairs, Martha is cleaning Stephanie’s wound on her head. Martha then remembers what the priest said about Stephanie having a claw wound on her arm. She removes the covers and sees the claw wound Stephanie has.

    “Oh my God…” Martha whispered.

“What happened…?” Stephanie asked, feeling a little light-headed because of how hard she hit her head.

“Where did you get this scratch from?” Martha asked.

Stephanie lifts up her head a little to look at it. She then rests her head down on the pillow again. “I don’t know where that came from…” she said, “Mom, for the past few days I don’t know what’s been going on with me…”

“Stephanie, where’s the bible I gave you? Do you still have it?” Martha asked.

Stephanie turns to the side and responds, “I lost it…”

“Where did you have it last?”

“Mom,” Stephanie exclaimed, “A bible isn’t going to save me! It didn’t save me, it didn’t save Brandon, and it didn’t save anyone else who was on their death bed waiting to die!”

Those words had completely put Martha into shock. There was a long pause.

    “I’m sorry…” Stephanie apologized.

“No Honey, it’s okay.” Martha said, “All I need you to do is be strong and you’ve been doing a good job so far…”

Stephanie forced a smile on her face. As much as it hurt Martha to hear that Stephanie did lose faith in God, all she was worried about now was figuring out what was going on, and for Stephanie to feel better. There was just no time to argue or debate if there was actually a God or not and to listen to their differences that they would both disagree on.

“Does the scratch hurt?” Martha asked, cleaning it.

“It does a little bit…I’m fine.” Stephanie answered.

“So here’s what we’ll do,” Father Sinclair was telling Peter, Andrew and Andrea, “we’re going to figure out what is going on right now. We’ll go upstairs and me and Nathaniel will try and see if there’s a demon who wants Stephanie. If there isn’t, Stephanie will just have to go to more hospital visits, I’m guessing…but if we are, we have a lot work to do.”

“Father…” Peter called, “Do you think that…if there was a demon, do you think that you could get rid of it…?”

“Depending on how evil or wanting the demon is of her soul, it could take up to one or several days.” Father Nathaniel answered.

Peter nods and they all get up.

“Andrea,” Peter says, “Thanks so much for bringing Andrew, I’m sorry to have wasted your time, but if you want, you can go home now…”

“Peter,” Andrea said, “Stephanie is like my sister, I’m staying until we have a conclusion on this. I’m not just going to leave. I’ll stay here to support you guys for as long as you need.”

That brought a smile to Peter’s face.

“Thanks…so much.” Peter said, still smiling.

Andrew gathers his equipment, Peter and Andrea help him. They all go upstairs to try and figure out what is going on with Stephanie.
