• A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

    “Mom!”
It’s here again. That same manipulating dream that made her relive a nightmare. This dream particularly was so terrifying to her, she went into shock. She pleaded for those memories to go away. Yet, those kinds of memories are the ones that will always stay.
He got away from them. How could they not capture him? Her worst nightmare is still out there, and it could become a reality once again when I least expect it.

Fifteen year old Mary Parkerson, woke up from one of her worst memories. Last Halloween was one of the most terrible nights of her life. Those memories were locked up in the back of her mind and now all of a sudden they were free. It’s nearly the crack of dawn. She comes to a conclusion after not hearing her mother’s voice or hearing foot steps, that she is the only one in the house. Now all Mary can do is relive that night a third time in hope it will go away. She remembers that night like the back of her hand.
It was pitch black and scary because it was Halloween. The perfect night for an attack. Mary was walking home from a party. She was offered a ride, but refused and said,
“No, it’s ok John, it’s only a couple blocks away.”
“Alright, have a good night” John said.

While she was walking home, she felt as if she was being followed.
Yet whenever she turned around, no one was there. She was only about ten houses away from hers. Everyone’s lights were off. This made her all the more paranoid because no one would be watching if something happened. All she remembers after that, is an icy cold hand on her left arm and a foul smelling rag being put over her mouth. Her vision went blurred and she was knocked unconscious. Mary woke in a dark, enclosed room. She felt the walls and they were cold, but felt like wood. There was a small amount of light coming from a crack in the wall. That gave her the impression that it was daytime. She got up off the ground, trying to look for any way to get out. There were no exits, except for a locked door on the other side of the room. Mary decided to just go back to sleep until something happened. Maybe she would get lucky and someone would come looking for her and find her.

She woke to a door slam. Looking at the man in front of her, she didn’t recognize him. Did he know her? Or was it just some psycho person after random people? She decided to ask, “What do you want from me?” The deep, croaky voice answered her back.
“I want you dead. Your father caused me to lose the love of my life! She thinks I’m a monster now. So now I’m going to get my revenge. I’m going to make him lose someone he loves. Then he will feel the grief I’ve felt, for the last 17 years!” Terrified, she just stood still. Wondering what her father did to him.
“How did he make you lose the love of your life? What did he do to make her think you’re a monster?” Mary asked. His voice was more fragile now.
“We weren’t very good with money. We were always begging for the bank to let us pay the loans a little late and one day he led her to me. What she didn’t know that he did know, was that I was threatening people to give me their money. I would then just tell her that something happened and I got a raise. After she saw me threaten someone with a gun pointed to their head, she filed a court case on me, and never saw me the same. I wasn’t able to see my son or her. If your father never led her to me that night, she would still be here.” She sat there with sorrow, but confusion. He stepped forward towards her. She got up and went to move away, but then her back touched a wall. “I’m so sorry, but why me? I’m not the one who put you through all that misery.” Mary didn’t care for her dad very much. He never showed compassion for her when she got bullied, never showed him being proud of her when she accomplished something good. “You don’t get to say sorry. And I’m after you because I know that it would kill him if you were to die,”
he said. She went to say something “I still don’t kn-’’ he swung his arm and smacked her across the face, dropped and flung to the floor. She started crying now. Partly because she could die and another because when she fell, she hit head a wrench laying near the corner of the room. Wait!! A wrench! Perfect. She grabbed the wrench, launched upward towards him, swung her hand, and smacked the wrench on his head. Watching in amazement that it actually worked, she ran for the door. Yes, it was unlocked. She ran, ran for her life back to her house. She wasn’t very far. Just about 10 minutes away. All she thought about was running to her house, calling the police, and then explaining to her mom what happened.

As soon as she got to her house she literally almost bashed down the door from running into it so fast. Her mom ran to the staircase. Her mouth dropped, she started to have tears, but as soon as she saw the fear in her daughter’s eyes, she rushed to her. Mary told her mom she would explain everything in a little bit, but first she had to call the police. About 10 minutes later, the cops arrived at Mary’s house. Asking where the place is that she locked the man in. she got in the car, and directed them to it. Once the shed like room was in sight, fear overcame her. The door was open. He escaped. He wasn’t in or around the shed, and there was nothing that could say that Mary was telling the truth, except for a couple of small drops of blood on the ground, and a wrench.

Mary heard a door open and close and her mother’s voice saying
“Mary, I’m home!” Jane heard no answer, she got worried. She ran to her daughter’s room. And found her in the corner of her room, rocking herself back and forth with her knees to her chest, and her hands wrapped around them, mumbling
“He’s still out there, they haven’t found him yet. It’s been almost a year, and nothing.” She kept saying that over and over, like a broken record player. Jane knew why she was doing this and what the mumbling was about, but is what Jane wanted to know, was why now? Why almost a year from the incident was she doing this now? What caused it? She sat down with her daughter, and talked to her about it. Getting every answer, to every question she asked.

Mary knew that this year, to get a ride ahead of time for future parties. She is not about to let anything happen to herself again. She learned that she should’ve taken that ride from John because she knew she would’ve been safe and wouldn’t have been kidnapped that night, but if not that night, then when? Whenever she goes to parties, she stays by one of her friends the entire time, and not to ever walk home alone again
