• As parents and singles gather candy for the coming event,
I wonder in the back, why it is that candy is most
    Paramount?
The beep of the registers is a drone never heard by
    Those accustomed to the sound.
Another empty place on the shelf needs to be
Filled with the confections craved by the Halloween
    Spirited.
A heft of the box and a sinister smile proceeds the splitting
    Of the double doors to
    the sales floor.
The box is marked with the red spelling of candy. The letters seem to
    Drip with the ink.
As I pass the customers and their children, shocked
Looks cover their faces and they quickly leave their carts of food and
    Confections.
I kneel at the empty place, my face hidden by my
    Working attire.
I reach out with a seemly skeletal hand and place the bags of Halloweeny rewards in
    The slot.
I look up and with the reflection of a child’s eyes I see two things,
A scream building in the child’s mouth and
    Death delivering candy.
