• "Won't you give me some food?"
    the little girl begs.
    But the people only stare
    or coldly turn their heads.
Her eyes hold back the tears,
    she bravely asks again.
    She must ask for herself.
She has no family, no friends.
    The people just walk by
    and avoid the filthy child.
    Her eyes fall down dejected,
she tugs at hair gone wild.
She goes back to her alley
    and to her cardboard home.
She sits there in the silence
where she then cries all alone.
    She rests her heavy head
    upon her folded hands
and drifts off to pleasant dreams
    of a hungerless land.
She dreams that gentle people come
and that they take her home
but it's a squeak that wakes her
    to the darkness all alone.
