The trees have changed,
No longer green,
Now golden brown has set the scene,
For the night of Halloween,
The fallen leaves rustle round,
Tumbling across the ground,
As if disturbed by unseen feet,
This special night starts out discrete,
Though its mystic qualities won’t wait long,
To transform the night into a throng,
Of the most eerie of phenomenon,
Across the moons glowing face you’ll surely see,
A silhouette followed by the sound of cackling,
Letting you know that a witch roams free,
Her pointed hat in place just where it should be,
A wart on her nose and a cat in her lap,
Her fingers give a quick little snap,
And her broom takes off just like bat,
Leaving only the darkness and an echoing laugh,
Then by the starlight what do I see?
Could that be a goblin behind that old tree?
A short little creature who’s skin is all green,
Extending his claws which glow a white sheen,
From the desolate branches I catch a slight gleam,
Of squinted eyes narrow and mean,
Then vanishes as if only a dream,
Then the silence is shattered by a howl,
Now the werewolves are on the prowl.
But even this won’t keep me from the sweet treasure I value,
For I have a defense that will make them all scowl,
A silver pendent won’t sit too well in their bowels,
Just a couple more houses to hit,
I figure a shortcut will wrap things up quick,
Dashing by pumpkins whose eyes are all lit,
Wickedly grinning from where they now sit,
As if a joke had been told by one in their midst,
My journeys end now in sight,
I rush towards home so that I might,
Retire from this boundless night,
Born of guile, fear, and fright,
And like a field now fresh and ripe,
Was earlier in days fading light,
Gathered up so that it might,
Fill the cryptic skies of night,
with arcane and mystic flights,
That when left to image the mind delights,
But then the air is set ablaze,
The starry night now orange haze,
Against the land still morbid shades,
I stand in awe as splendid rays,
Mark the end of Hallows day,
At least for this year any ways!
