Leonard McCoy

Solitude. You could never gain that on this ship. Even when you were in your own quarters, it wasn’t long before a cadet with a message from sickbay, stating they needed him right away. Though the more annoying ones came from Kirk. The sly b*****d found it amusing to push his buttons at times. Then again, McCoy would reward his friend the same treatment later. But lately such revenge kept slipping away. Bones couldn’t really recall the last time he had gotten back at Jim for his antics. Was he really losing it now?

He was forty-one. And damn did he feel like a haggard old man. He surely looked like one and the girl had pointed it out to him. Shitty is too kind, he thought to himself.

The doctor glanced now to the woman when she entered the room afterwards. She seemed excited almost to get some coffee of her own. Little did he know, it was more. Bones arched a brow in a curious notion when she ripped off the filter chamber of the coffee maker. He let out a soft snort at the look on her face. He could read it quite well. McCoy was a doctor not a damn miracle maker of coffee. Keeping quiet and drinking his bitter coffee, Bones would glance over towards her to see what she was brewing. It was apparent she knew how to properly use the machine unlike he.

Bones shook his head, “Not a problem…I knew I brewed s**t…I needed a bitter taste.” He responded with a slight grin. He was half way taking a sip when her question arose. There was a ping of annoyance across his features. The words ‘old man’ stuck out the most. A disgruntled glance her way was answer enough to that particular question. He wasn’t about to spill the beans. Not even Jim knew, and they had been friends for ten years.

A box of chocolate couldn’t make it better let alone the freshly brewed coffee. It was intriguing the doctor greatly. The smell was refreshing. He glanced downward at his coffee mug. The pool of dark liquid did little to aid him, so his gaze turned on the young woman.

Frowning heavily at her blunt statement the doctor replied, “I’m thinking about nothing…mind your own damn business.” Frustrated with himself, Leonard slammed the mug down on the counter and headed towards the door. He moved his hand across the panel opening it.
“You better get out before someone catches you here.” He said over his shoulder before the doors closed behind him.

Leonard was peeved with himself. He shouldn’t have snapped at her, but the lack of sleep and the guilt plaguing his mind. He just…No. What he needed to do was get into sickbay without being noticed, find the hypospray and get it over with. He’d apologize later, that is, if he ever saw that woman again.

He highly doubted it. Bones was good at keeping people away.

All I have left is my bones..
