Spinner’s End, a dreary section of the town. The poorest of the poor lived there. Those that had lingered in life by moving from one job to the next, not caring if you kept it at the end of the week. It was surprising that a wizard could be found lingering in the dingy little back room of the row house.

A boy at the age of eighteen sat cross legged on a bed that had seen better years. His attire was worn and far too big for his frame. and only added to his rather tiresome appearance. Severus Snape was a thin man with pale skin and a large, hooked nose. He had shoulder length, greasy black hair which framed his face in curtains. His cold, black eyes, resembled an endless dark pain of misery. His thin lips, no matter what his feelings seemed to always be in a sneer.

Snape had not enjoyed the fact of returning home. Well, he could never consider it as such when you could be at Hogwarts. At least there, he felt some warmth of friends (cohorts to be exact, but close enough) and the learning! Ah, it was the only time he could practice magic without being brandished with an object. Even now, despite the years, his father had shown his still dislike of the use of magic. Severus believed his muggle parent thought that he would be inadequate compared to his wonderful pure-blooded mother.

Which always arose the question still in his mind, ‘why did his mother not simply fight back?’

His thoughts of brooding were interrupted by his father’s yelling that informed the young man that he needed to pull his weight around the house. Severus nearly shot back a reply but held his tongue. He had learned from years that speaking your mind in this household was seen as the devil. Shuffling off the bed, he headed towards the door but paused for a moment. Snape’s gaze lingered towards his school trunk. He didn’t feel quite safe without it.

Unlatching the locks, he carefully opened the trunk and started to rummage through it. When Severus would return home from Hogwarts, he had to make sure to hide his wand, or else his father took it upon himself to use it as firewood. Though of course, his father never did get to use it since his mother would rescue it. That was the only time he saw her show him defiance.
The unpleasant memories were shoved aside as he found the wand buried within his school robes. Snape tucked it within the confines of his shirt.

He tightened the belt around his waist to keep the pants from slacking down further. Severus took the rack and black sack from his father and was out the back door. The young male groaned loudly, not hiding his distaste for the mess outside. The large crooked trees had shed all their leaves scattered about the already screwed up yard. Not to mention the Hilderbrands left their bottles of brandy littering in their yard once more.

The wizard had taken more than a couple of steps before he heard the usual uproar from inside the homestead. His parents were at it again, this time, of course, his mother’s voice was heard more than ever.

His knuckles turned a paler white as he clenched the rake harder and harder. It had been years of torment, abuse and neglect that he wondered to himself, why he kept coming here.

The answer of course was simple. Her name was, Lily Evans. Despite the fact he had turned her against him…He always had hope that the girl of his affliction would return the same gazes…the thoughts of desire. But…he had tarnished the chance of ever having her. His pride had ruined him.

Yet, no matter what words he’d given Lily, she refused them. It had been a semester since that point in time and she hadn’t looked his way.

Severus huffed in annoyance and tossed the rake aside and pulled out his wand from within his shirt. Damn his father. He’d use magic. The restrictions of underage wizardry and of students had been lifted in light of the recent dangers happening from the uprisings here and there. Severus wasn’t worried about it.

A rare smile formed as the backyard looked a little more welcoming after the little incantation. Tucking the wand back into safety, Severus took his leave of the row house and taking the alley way. He didn’t know where he was going, but anything was better than his home of ever fighting parents.

At least out in the open…you were noticed.
