• The Breed- By RosesKiss

    -----------Chapter 1------------------Dream--------------------

It started out with nothing but a candle in the dark. The light flickering, causing shadows dancing on the walls. My eyes slowly opened, adjusting, looking up towards the ceiling. I sat up in a bed feeling dizzy. Confusion filled my head as I looked around the gloomy room. I did not know this room, I did not know where I was. The night gown I wore didn’t even belong to me. I sat at the edge of the bed and tried standing up, catching my balance. I walked towards the closed dusty drapes against the wall and pushed them aside to see what was behind them. Thinking that I was going to be looking out a window I was now looking at my reflection. My skin looked pale and my eyes red .My dark brown hair looked like it was in knots, as if I was in a cat fight. There was a sudden knocking on the door and I jumped, holding my heart in my chest. I looked at the door, too nervous to move. After a minute standing there frozen I finally got my feet to move towards the door. With my hand shaking, I turned the knob, afraid what I was going to be looking at face to face. The door was now opened with nobody behind it, only darkness. I took the candle on the side of my night table next to the door and poked my head out looking to the left and then towards the right, still I saw nothing but darkness. I walked slowly out into this black tunnel and still saw nothing. The door behind me quickly shut, leaving me in the dark with just the sound of my heartbeat and the candle in my hand. I turned around in front of the door, trying to open it but the knob wasn’t turning. I turned around staring into the darkness and took a deep breath. There was nothing else to do but to just start walking. I walked into the darkness for about 5 minutes, hoping to find the end. A sudden gust of wind passed through my hair, blowing out the flame to my candle. A sudden fear went through my body. I dropped the candle to the floor and ran in the darkness. I heard my heart racing, thumping now with fear. Suddenly, a white light was forming at the end of the darkness. I slowed down, now walking and catching my breath. It grew bigger as I kept walking towards the light. I suddenly felt as if I wasn’t alone in this dark tunnel. Whatever it was, I felt as if it was standing behind me. The hair on my neck was standing and I can feel its warm breath on my neck. I turned my head slowly to see what was behind me, and then suddenly I met two glowing red eyes not far away from my face and opened my mouth to let out a piercing scream.

The alarm clock rang and fell off my night table to the floor. I quickly sat up on my bed rubbing my eyes. I looked around my room and I was happy to notice that I was now in my own room in my own bed.
“What a nightmare.” I mumbled to myself and shook my head.
I stood on my feet and stretched as I walked my way to the bathroom. I walked past a mirror and paused for a second. I walked back to the mirror to look at myself. My hair was not knotted and my eyes were not red at all, my skin looked fine with healthy color. This is how I always look when I wake up in the mornings.
I hurried up and brushed my teeth. I ran down stairs to eat breakfast. My mother was there sitting at the table sipping at some coffee and skimming through a magazine as I got my bowl of cereal.
“Good morning Cassie.” my mother greeted while yawning.
    “You’re up early.”
    “I know mom, I had a nightmare”
“Want to talk about it?” she asked me without taking her eyes off the magazine.
“No it’s alright.” I didn’t want to talk about it. I didn’t want to remind myself of those red eyes that stared at my face. The dream felt so real. As I thought about it a shiver went down my spine. I took my time as I ate my breakfast.
“So what time did you get home last night?” she asked me, this time looking in my direction.
I looked away from her and stared into my bowl of cereal.
“Well, what time did u get home?”
I hesitated before I answered her. I knew if I told her the real time I was going to have a lecture of staying out late, especially if last night was Halloween. I also couldn’t lie to her, knowing my mom she probably didn’t sleep till I got home.
“Well… Tory and I had a lot of homework to do and we both had reports, and you know now teachers want reports to be typed on the computer.” I wasn’t being very honest right about now. Being that I didn’t have a computer I thought this would have been a good excuse she would buy. I didn’t look at her when I told her my excuse; she knew what time I came home last night.
“Cassie you know how I feel about you getting home late, especially last night. You think coming home at 1:30 in the morning isn’t going to worry me?” She looked at me very serious. My mom worried too much about me, but I guess that’s just how mothers are.
“Sorry mom.” I said looking deeper into my bowl sinking in my chair. She shook her head. She looked at her wrist watch and gasped at the time.
“Well I have to hurry out of here I’m going to be late for work, we‘ll finish this discussion later when I get home”
My mom took her last sip of her coffee and tossed the magazine on the table.
“I still love you no matter what don’t you forget that, I‘ll see you later.” She said as she pushed in her chair and kissed the top of my head. She slid the car keys off the table and rushed out the front door.
I sat quiet at the square kitchen table playing with the spoon in my bowl.

Last night was Halloween and that was the only holiday my mom didn’t celebrate. She says Halloween is the day people worship the devil, evil. That’s what she believed. I didn’t believe it; I thought it was a fun holiday to celebrate. I sat home on my couch watching TV as my mom complained about the ringing of the doorbell, she refuses to answer the door on this day. I’m surprised, after living here for 8 years, that people still rang our doorbell. I flipped through the channels and nothing caught my interest, so I left it on Friday The 13th. I’ve seen this movie every year on Halloween; it doesn’t even scare me anymore. The phone rang and my mother answered it.
“Cassie, its Tory on the phone!” She yelled from the kitchen.
Tory was my only best friend. I didn’t have many friends. I met her freshman year of high school and we’ve stayed friends ever since, were now seniors in high school. She wasn’t like me, the unpopular one, and the quiet one who stays in the background. She knew everyone in school and got along with them all very well.
I got up quickly off the couch, and ran to the phone. I swiped it out of my moms hand.
“Hey Tory!” I said excited to get a phone call. It saved me from dying on my couch.
“Hey Cassie, how are you doing?”
“Not all that great, just sitting here staring at the television.”
“I knew that’s what you were doing. Well that’s why I’m calling you, get your butt over at my house now , were crashing the Conner’s Halloween party.”
“That’s awesome …But how am I…” I hesitated and looked around to see if I saw my mother in sight before I continued what I was going to say.
“How am I going to convince my mom to let to me go to a party, you know how she feels about this day, and its already 8 o‘clock at night.” I whispered.
“Well tell her your just going to be at my house using me computer for school, you know that usually works”
“Ugh alright fine, I’ll call you back.” I hung up the phone and went to the living room were my mom was sitting on the couch. I sat next to her and cleared my throat before I spoke.
    “Umm… mom?”
“Yes Cassie?” She said while he was looking at the TV.
“I’m going to go to Tory’s, I need to use her computer for school.” I hated that I was eighteen years old and I still had to get my moms approval to go places.
She looked at me with worry in her eyes.
“Cassie, you know how I feel about you going out on Halloween.”
    “Mom…”
She looked at me and hesitated for a couple of seconds before she spoke.
“Fine, don’t come home late you know it’s a school night. Don’t forget your jacket its cold outside.”
I got up off the couch and rushed up the stairs to my room. I grabbed my purse, car keys and my makeup bag off my dresser. I looked in my purse to make sure I had my cell phone before I left my room. Quickly, I ran back down the stairs, I took my jacket off the coat rack at the end f the stairs and gave my mom a hug before I left out the front door. I sat in my car excited and shut the door. I put the key in the ignition and before I knew it I was already half way to Tory’s house. Her driveway was empty when I got there so that’s were I parked my car. I took my cell phone out to call her to tell her that I was outside. As I waited for her to come out I put on my make-up using the rearview mirror. I never thought I was the prettiest sight to look at but didn’t care what people thought of me. Tory finally came out. She shut and locked her front door. I didn’t notice what she was wearing until she sat next to me in the front seat.
“You didn’t tell me it was a COSTUME PARTY!” I sat there nervous now, knowing that I was going to be the only person there without a costume on.
“I’m sorry, I thought u were going to get the hint , being that it’s a Halloween party.
“Well you know I don’t even own a Halloween costume.” The excitement that I had a couple of minutes now turned into nervousness.
“I have some costumes inside, want to borrow one?” She asked with apology in her voice
“No, its alright, were going to be late.”
I started the car and now we were on our way.
