• A wail of the siren pierced the already noisy hockey arena. People shrieked hysterically. Then a voice came over the P.A. and said “This is just a practice. Please go under the bleachers until further notice. Please remain calm and keep your children with you until you can come out.” As soon as people herd this they calmed down and went underneath the bleachers with the hockey players who put on their skate guards. After a heated game with the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oliers, people were getting autographs from the Flames. Those who where left went outside and someone shouted: “The Concord is flying over head.” A little girl said to her father: “Daddy I want to fly to Paris on the Concord.” That night the little girl wanted to watch the Carol Burnett Show at 6:30 after the 6:00 national news. That night as they watched the news about what Prime Minister Trudeau was doing the little girl all of a sudden said “I don’t like Prime Minister Trudeau!” and that was it.
Two years passed and little girl grew and faithfully watched the news only to get more and more frustrated with Prime Minister Trudeau like when he changed or more like made the national anthem official but then he also changed some of the lines of the anthem . Also Mt. St. Helens… well that scared her a lot. She kept wondering if there where any volcanoes in Calgary. A year later she heard about the marriage of Princess Dianna and Prince Charles. With that she knew that Fairy Tale endings might come true. Then there was the AIDS break out. When it came out people thought that AIDS was from monkeys but now we know better. Then in 1983 Prime Minister Trudeau’s term ended and Brian Mulrony took over. Finally when she was 18 in 1986 there was the Chernobyl disaster and that left her scared that a nuclear disaster might happen in Canada. Then there was the Colombia disaster she thought that it was a sad time because all of those people lost their lives. Now that little girl is grown up and she has a degree in Psychology Sociology, a Masters in Religious Education and a Masters in Theological Studies in Counseling. And I am proud to say that little girl is my mother.
