• “Why?” Serenity choked on her words, “Why did you have to do this?” Her face was red with fever, sweat rolled over her forehead. She clenched the sheets, “Why!” She let out a week cough. Her midnight hair stuck to her face.
“Why did you have to take his life? I’m alone now. Alone to die! What are the other Guardians supposed to do without us? First you kill him and now you are going to kill me! I’m so sick I could die right now. I’m going to die alone. Don’t you see me suffering? Didn’t you see him suffering?
We gave you everything we could, we gave you are souls! Our very own souls are gone. And you repay us with this? You have repaid so many of us with death? I thought we were granted eternal life? But no; instead we get a harsh, painful death.” She coughed harder, the sign of her early death.
She closed her eyes, patiently waiting for her heart to stop. “Please God. Don’t do this. He gave his life for me, my brother. So please just don’t all do anything. I just can’t die now.” Serenity slowly began to drift away. Her coughing seeming to stop.
Then she heard it. The jaunty music that made her smile. Her mind was filled with her favorite memory, of which she was sure she had forgotten. It was dancing. Her and her brother dancing. Moving together in harmony, to the lively rhythm. It was the happiest moment of her life. The last happy moment. The day after dancing, he died. She could hear the words he whispered into her ear. “Come on Ren-Ren, don’t be sad.” Ren-Ren, short for Serenity. Edan was the only one allowed to call her by the playful nickname. She missed the sound of the name.
She quietly muttered the words to herself. “Ren-Ren.” Over and over the unspoken words tainted her lips. Most of the time it was just Ren, but then at certain times it was Ren-Ren. All of her favorite memories involved that word, but she barely had any memories. The ones that weren’t happy normally were either her being bedridden or someone dead. The happy ones were delightful. They were bound to her soul. The last of the few things she had. And that was a small list.
    A list of Serenity’s things
    A small dagger.
    A Guardian named Mizuki.
The gift of reading the unassuming thoughts of others.
    A bloodstained cloak.
    A black-button eyed rag doll.
    A few high spirited memories.
And plenty of heart-stabbing painful memories that crushed her soul.
But it was better than nothing. And nothing is what she feared.
