Megan held the revolver in her lap, spinning the cylinder and counting the empty chambers as the spun. She placed a single bullet into the end and continued counting the empty chambers.
David listened to the metal click as she slowly turned the cylinder with her thumb. She snapped the gun closed and put the barrel to her lips. She pulled her trembling hand away and threw the gun onto the scarred table. She buried her head in her arms as she broke into tears.
David watched her from the bathroom doorway as the girl he loved continued to disappear. Light silhouetted her from the open bathroom door He looked around the dim motel room. His gaze fell back on her. He moved over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. She didn't seem to notice.
He had loved Megan, but this was not her. This was nothing more than a shadow of what she had once been. The girl he had loved had died during the accident He knew he couldn't keep dragging her along. She was doing nothing but slowing him down.
Megan stopped crying, picked up the gun once more, and continued counting the chambers.
"One…..Two…Three,"
David watched her count.
"Four."
Her eyes were hidden in the tangled shadows of her band and he was glad for that.
"Five"
The life within them had died. The once bright emerald had been replaced with a dull, flat green. The bruises that dotted her arms seemed to blend in with the surrounding darkness, making it seem like patches of her flesh had faded away. His eyes moved to the stitches on her cheek. It would turn into a scar. It would be there forever, like a permanent reminder.
"Six."
Megan stopped counting and looked up at him. David turned away and moved back to the lit bathroom. He closed the door so only a crack of light fell on his dead girl.
He went back to Megan and sat opposite of her at the table. A smile pulled at his lips. He could only see Megan's silhouette against the darkness. The light hit the barrel of the gun as she set it back onto the table.
"David-"
David shushed her. He didn't want to hear her speak. Not in that weak, cracking wisp, it wasn't her voice. Her voice was strong but sweet, not weak like this. This wasn't his girl, his girl was gone.
"Let's play a game," He said as he slid the cylinder back into the gun and cocked the hammer. He put the metal to his lips and pulled the trigger.
Click
His faith in her was gone. She was broken, lost forever to the darkness she hid in. They would find him because of her.
"One," she mumbled.
He gave her the gun. He put it to her lips and pulled the trigger.
Click
"Two"
If only she were stronger. If Only she hadn't died.
He took the gun.
Click
"Three."
She took it from him. He could hear her fingers fumble against it as she cocked it.
Click
"Four."
She had become nothing but a frightened little girl. She was never coming back.
David listened to the hollow click. His smile grew wider.
"Five," She said as she took the gun back. He could hear the relief in her voice. He could sense the smile on her face. His blood turned to ice. Megan cocked the gun.
"Six."
She pressed it to her lips and pulled the trigger.
