• The Shadow seemed so nice at first
    He was polite; he never cursed.
    But then I found his real desire
    His real concern was much more dire.

    The Shadow's laugh rang in my ear,
    "Come, dear child, listen here.
    I have a chore, if you want:
    Find me a soul that I can haunt."

    "But dear Shadow," I replied
    "I have no family, my parents died.
    I would so like to have a friend;
    That one who loves me 'til the end!"

    The Shadow smiled and took my hand.
    "Dearest child, I'll be your friend.
    I'll treat you right, and even more
    if you complete my simple chore."

    I looked into the Shadow's eyes
    But I could not see through the guise
    I smiled and I shook his hand.
    "I'll do your task, new bestest friend."

    The Shadow grinned a devious way.
    "I'd help you, child, but I must stay
    In the darkness, in the night;
    I fear I can't step out in light."

    And so I left to do his task;
    To do what he so kindly asked.
    I cried, I bed, I tried to plea
    But no one would come back with me.

    "I'm sorry, Shadow, I did my best!"
    I said while seeing he was vexed.
    He frowned and snarled and stood up straight,
    His eyes clouded with angry hate.

    "Child," He said, while calming down.
    "See what you've done? You've made me frown.
    I'm afraid now I won't be your friend.
    All I can offer is your end."

    At this I frowned and shied away.
    "Surely you don't mean what you say!"
    The Shadow slowly shook it's head.
    "It stops to hurt after you're dead."

    "Well then, Shadow, I do declare.
    I must fight back to be fair.
    And because you won't be my friend
    It's YOU who will face an untimely end."

    And then I reached and hit the light
    And the Shadow cried in pain and fright.
    "Oh, no, child, what have you done?"
    "Oh, dear Shadow, I have won."
