Nikki Valentine was just like any other kid...Well, that is, if every other kid was born and raised for the soul purpose of becoming Don. Some say that Nikki Valentine is a stuck up, priveledged brat. Those are the people who haven't known him for very long.
(Little Nikki, age 7)
Nikki was pushed by his father, the previous don, Giovanni. Nikki learned how to kill a man at the young age of five, could shoot a gun at the age of six and killed his first Belle at age eight. Nikki had to struggle to survive in the Valentines. It was well known that he was to be the next Don. Giovannni Valentine was a brutal teacher.

Nikki's cousin, Joey Valentine had always been jealous of Nikki. Joey was always trying to outdo Nikki, always unnoticed. One day, when Nikki was five, and Joey was seven, Joey had an idea. Nikki walked down the hallway, after his "classes." Nikki turned a corner and saw his cousin. "Hey Joey!" He said smiling.

Joey looked at Nikki angrily and hit him in the head with a baseball bat. Nikki blacked out. He later woke up in the pitch black, he was tied up. He tried to scream, but he was gagged. Nikki couldn't believe Joey would do this. He lay there in the darkness for what turned out to be three and a half hours. That was when the trunk of the car opened. Nikki was questioned, but found the stress of ratting out his cousin unbearable. "It was the Belles." He lied. This is what started the flare in conflict between the two families, true, they hated each other previous to this, but then they didn't attack each other on the streets, it was a more diplomatic time. This isn't to say that neither side wanted to escalate things. It was Nikki, who started it, no one knew that except he and Joey, and it was a secret Nikki planned on taking to the grave.
